Be the One Who Knows but Don’t Speak!

“Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.” Lao Tzu

Those who know the most speak the least because they do not need to speak to show that they know. Wise or knowledgeable people say little. They know what they know so they do not have to speak about what they already know.

Therefore, those who know don’t speak. They don’t feel the need to talk all the time. True wisdom can not be communicated by words. Instead, it must be obtained by direct experience. The wise do not speak.

However, those who speak don’t know. People who speak most volubly are those who know the least about the subject in question. The more they speak, the more they show their ignorance.

Moreover, those who are ignorant offer an opinion on everything. “Ignorance often speaks the loudest”… The people that speak the loudest are often those that have nothing to say. They know the least but they are the most convinced of their understanding. It is said the ignorance is louder than reason.

There is a reason God gave us two ears and only one mouth.

Thanks for sharing and have a great, productive week.

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."

Thought to be said by Abraham Lincoln, or Mark Twain. Though recent research points to an earlier version by Maurice Switzer in 1907.

"It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool than to talk and remove all doubt of it."

There is even a similar phrase from the Bible, King James version - "Even a fool when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

No doubt there is an earlier version out there as well as this seems to be what is known as a universal truth.

Though most people struggle to keep thoughts to themselves, we are a talkative bunch for the most part and we want to express ourselves.

There is merit to the old saying "Silence is Golden"

What about those who write?! They seem to know quite a bit!

It’s a paradox this one. If those who knew did not actually speak what they knew, then none of the ancient Chinese wisdom would have got handed down verbally from generation to generation.

But I’m probably not right about that or I wouldn’t have said anything!

Thought-provoking blog - love it!
