You do not need to wait for it to expire. If I were you I would renew it immediately and transfer it to WA, which will mean you will be paying an extra charge (all of what, $15, maybe). However, if you wait someone else will renew it and use it.
It is when you transfer your domain to a new host that the new host will charge you for your domain renewal so that you will not lose the domain. Never let a domain registration expire unless you have no further use for it.
Go back to where you had purchased it and contact their support staff for help renewing your domain name.
Hope this helps you.

You can simply leave it registered at the place you were at and forward the nameservers for it to WA so that WA does the webhosting while namecheap for example does the domain registration. Namecheap is probably also cheaper for that matter.
And like Triblu says, when it is registered elsewhere it will be possible to move it to WA. An unregistered domain goes into a quarantine usually, unless you re-enable it as soon as possible at your old provider.
My advice: go to your old provider and register/renew the domain registration. Then do a nameserver change:
such as the ipage tutorial here, but there are many trainings available for each hosting provider: Changing Nameserver Steven
