The Work Results Delay

When you are building your website, it's very easy to get stuck in the JOB mentality of "when I do work, I want to get paid". It's very discouraging to work 6 hours on an article, then not see it rank. After a few weeks or months of it not making money, it feels even worse, like you wasted your time.
I'm no stranger to those feelings.
But when you are working online building niche websites that rely on organic traffic from search engines there is a delay between when you complete the work and when you see results.
I read a post in WA earlier today where the person actually stopped working on their website for a while, and was surprised to come back later to discover some Amazon earnings! This is not uncommon, and I've heard this story many times before. In fact, I've lived it. That is why sometimes it's OK to take a break from your website when you get frustrated and spend some time working on other projects.
Your work doesn't disappear. It stews in Google, and if you did good work, it settles down in a nice ranking where it can get traffic. Do that 100 times, and now you have 100 little traffic points settling down in Google over a period of time that will accumulate more and more traffic.
This is how an authority site is built!
You've heard it over and over again, but it's worth repeating. Success doesn't come in a landslide. It's built little by little over time.
Just to show my own experience with this, I'll show you a website I built this year. It's a quirky little website called Motion Sensor Sprinkler dot com http://motionsensorsprinkler.com/
I made it just to experiment with a theme, and happened to have a domain I bought based on my own interest, and good traffic/low competition stats. Here are the Amazon earnings from this year.

Of course, $100/year is nothing to write home about, but I also stopped working on the website and haven't grown it past about 10 posts plus some very short product reviews.
So, next time you start thinking, "Why am I not seeing any results?!" remember that success may be just around the corner. Take a look at what type of content you were creating 3-6 months ago, and the traffic/earnings you see NOW are going to be the result of your work at that time.
If you look back at old blog posts and say, "OMG, this stuff is not very good compared to what I'm doing now!", that's OK. But now you know why you are not seeing the results you want! If you are creating awesome content now that you have some experience under your belt, look forward in time 3-6 months and I'd bet you are going to see better results by that time.
*note: the time of 3-6 months is just an approximation based on my own experience, and there's no rule or guarantee that this will always happen, or that it's any kind of limitation on how fast you can earn
Main Points From This Post
- Success doesn't come in a landslide
- Even with experience, I cannot "supercharge" my results
- Take a look at what type of content you were creating 3-6 months ago, and the traffic/earnings you see NOW are going to be the result of your work at that time.

So true... I had a surprise payment from eBay one day. I never checked my stats as I wasn't really promoting so it was a lovely surprise!
Excellent perspective Nathaniell!
It is always good reinforcement reading blogs like the one you made here. Keeping oneself in reality is not always an easy task, nor is understanding (or better yet submitting to) the fact that building an online business, or any business, takes time and results are not immediate.
It's also good to know there is no "supercharge" system to get faster or better results. :-)
Are you going to pursue the example site now that it has brewed awhile or just ditch it? If you work it it would be cool to see where it's at and what you did to get it there in another 6 months or so.
ROCK ON!
E
I'll probably leave it up, but don't have immediate plans to build out. SOME earnings is hard to ignore, especially with the little amount of effort I put into the site though...maybe it would be worth my time to outsource some work. Not sure.
That's the cool thing about having something on the backburner. I can always build it out later!
Thank You Nathaniell for sharing & caring.
This is a great reference for us all to share with Friends who get frustrated very quickly and many times in the very 1st month.
Should we click on and visit your website link above or would that be considered against the WA blog rules?
Thank You for sharing Nathaniell,
Tony
I saw your post about spam Tony, and what you need to realize is that there is CONTEXT to consider. There is no rule of "no outbound linking of your will be a spammer".
In this case, it shows an example website that I'm talking about and I'm sure people will be curious what a website that's earning looks like. I"m not selling anything, and I"m using it to help people with something.
Including a website to drive traffic to your site is a violation.
Including a website to sell something is a violation.
Including a website to send people to training away from WA is a violation
Sometimes there are gray areas, and that's up the the blogger and other members to decide if it's spam or not. If you aren't sure, then ask first, or don't include it.
Should you click on the link? You don't have to. But it's there for anyone that wants to see it.
Thanks for sharing! You always post at the right time - when I start doubting myself. My site is 9 months old and I have made about $40 so far (all amazon). I recently had someone in WA (newish member) comment on a comment of mine that they would not still be here if they had only made $40 at the 9 month mark. This person made me feel (not intentionally I don't think) that I am doing something wrong.
Psh. $40 at 9 months is great. Now you know that you are doing SOMETHING right. In 90 months you'll be making $400 a day! You are at a starting point right now, and can grow and improve to increase traffic and earnings.
Know this is true, to many of you experienced people say the same thing. Thanks for the share,
Sami
Very true Nathaniell, as they say, you need to crawl before you can walk , and need to walk before you can run.
Great post. I agree that over time you start creating a much better content and can expect better results in terms of traffic and rankings.
Nate, this should be required reading. I plan to reference it in my existing articles and share with others that wonder why they haven't seen results even though they put in a lot of hours initially. Great stuff.
See you in a few weeks buddy!
I hear ya. As experienced marketers we know better. But delayed gratification is annoying as hell. lol
But I think the key is to make sure you have other projects or things bringing in income so you're not as fixation the one that hasn't made you money yet.

It's a nice reminder, Nathaniell. Makes me want to go back and re-examine all my posts to try and figure out why some are not ranking.
