I would definitely appeal and send them your findings. I think that is unfair to you and you should definitely do what you can to see if it can be reinstated.

If your suspicions are correct, definitely not cool on the part of Google. Then again, maybe this is they're way of making sure someone else wouldn't have been able to do this? :-)

I always advise Adsense users to install something like Adsense Invalid Click Protector to prevent click bombing. https://wordpress.org/plugins/ad-invalid-click-protector/

From the very beginning since I joined WA, I have heard negative things about Google Adsense and one is how it 'cheapens' the look of our websites.

I never bothered with it at all so, if it's going to cause you a headache I would just let it go and move on. I heard you have to have a lot of traffic and it's not worth the money.
