Site Comments: A Superb Feature That Is Sometimes Abused By Many

After nearly a month of using the Site Comments feature on Wealthy Affiliate, it has come to my attention that many commentators deal with it with sheer negligence.

Don't get me wrong, Site comments are super beneficial for our SEO and help to stimulate organic engagement and comments within our posts.

While many commenters are astonishing, keywords rich comment, grammatically correct, and to the point, many write their comments with the utmost negligence.

I am recently spending much of my time correcting comments and improving sentence structure. It reached a point where I had to rewrite the comment from scratch!

It is clear that some do not read the post in full before commenting.

The system needs some improvement, in my opinion; I suggest the following:

1- The ability to notify the commenter to correct mistakes.

2- The ability to notify the commenter to re-read the post and change the comment.

3- A grading system, as a website owner to have the ability to rate commenters on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to 10. The rating of each commenter to be seen in the Site Comments section.

4- Motivating commentors to install the free Grammarly browser extension, e.g: earn 10 credits to install the extension.

Please share your suggestions, experiences, and comments on this issue.

A question for all of you: How can I send feedback on this to Kyle or Carson?

Marc.

I like your proposal of a grading system. It may not always work though. Example: sometimes I type out a well thought out comment, include questions, taking my time to write a helpful comment; and when I click on submit I am notified that mine is a "duplicate comment". That has happened a few times and it is infuriating to me, because I spend time to create a unique comment, I abhor copy paste, and would never do copy paste.

So, installing those features you suggested will help but it will also make mistakes and perhaps backfire on decent commenters.

I think that the best thing to do for us all is to disapprove empty, copy cat, or vague comments.

Yes, it is getting very frustrating dealing with low quality comments. I like the idea of a grading system. I also like the idea I have seen others suggest in the past to have a tutorial or test everyone must pass in order be able to leave comments. If you don't pass the test you don't get to use Site Comments. It would show that you can read and follow instructions.

Yes Jessica, see if they can follow directions, specifically: No cutting and pasting. I like that tutorial idea too. Tell Kyle!

I think I have seen him involved in discussions of that in the past. I know it has been mentioned here quite a few times by multiple people. I think it would be the easiest step that could be taken to correct the problem.

Great thoughts, thanks Marc. The only thing I'm a little unsure about is suggestion 3 relating to grading. I see the positive thought of this idea but know from experience and research that such scales are not always accurate. Is my 3 your 3 and do people hit 5 as a quick hit for example and without detailed thought? These are just a couple of grading thoughts. There are many more based on a wide range of factors that affect how they will be used and how they might be seen.
Thank you
Steve

Those are some great suggestions, especially being able to contact the commenters.

Suggestions continued...

#5: The ability to actually choose the members we want comments from in our chosen category (based on their 1 - 10 scores). This will encourage "poor" commenters to either up their game or not use SiteComments at all.

#6: Bonus credits awarded to those who write so many high-quality comments containing X-number of words.

#7: New commenters to post so many high quality comments before they're allowed to request comments themselves.

#8: SiteComments also to contribute towards earning the WA ambassador title.

#9: Top commenters who post a few hundred quality comments to receive some WA SWAG goodies in the post (lol) & unlock some hidden WA features & bonus training etc.

#10: SiteComments to include templates (ones for reviews and ones for normal posts) to help members produce more engaging comments.

#11: SiteComments to have some sort of traffic light system like the Yoast plugin - showing what improvements must be made to the comments and picking up on repetitive filler words like "thanks", "thanks for sharing", "your article is good", etc - before being able to submit comments.

#12: Highlighters to actually SHOW poor commenters why we've rejected their comments.

Hi Neil,

While all your suggestions are spot on, I strongly agree with #5,#7,#9,#11, and #12.

Commenters need to be motivated to improve the quality of their comments, so in addition to the rating system, more rewards for top performers are an excellent idea.

Thanks,
Marc.

Indeed Marc!

I guess there are many improvements that can be made. But it takes time to see which work and which don't.

I love your suggestions here! I have a 100% approval rate over several years worth of comments so these sound great to me! I am tired of dealing with really low quality comments.

Thanking You muchly :)

Good for you! You set a a great example for others to follow.

I hear what you're saying about the poor comments, it's frustrating.

But there are other ways to get awesome comments:

1: Use the threads, but tell them what you expect in your comments.

If you say you want at least 50 words with the topic/product mentioned and that you'll return the same quality, you'll usually get some good comments.

2: This worked extremely well with Bootcamp... Organise a small group of "comment buddies" and also socially share one another's posts.

Either way, commenting takes a great deal of work. But it can pay off .

Neil, Wow, you have covered a myriad of nuances of filtering comments. Be good or be bad, but be specific and helpful. Be noticing what's done right, and how would they like their own cut and paste wimpy, albeit worthless waste? (I mean how useful would they find that about their own site(s))? #12 in review I suppose. That would take care of the human element, if you don't want a poorly crafted comment, don't be so cut and pasty ready to give one! Rather, which means, more and more, serve everyone better by raising the standard.
Thank you Neil, and I'm following you because I am an Emerald type personality and I like step by step explain it to me kind of thinking. Which you have!
Suzay

If you have to correct the comment, why should THEY get any credit?
It's like parents doing their kid's science project for them. Hey my parents had no clue what I was doing for a science project, until I needed to enter it in the Bi-County Science Fair. I needed a ride, and some bucks for lunch. I won a second place ribbon in Botany.

Marc, I'm following you. It looks to me like you are off to a good start for just getting here, not long ago.
WA is the WAy to be and go. I love it here! Please check out my profile and follow me back. I like writing, and need to bust it on the technical stuff, my weak spot.
Your new friend, Suzay

Hi Suzay,

I followed you back, and you can contact me anytime for help!

Cheers,
Marc.

Good points Suzay!

I like that offer Marc, yes!
