What Keeps Us Bloggers Up At Night Worrying?

In today's blog, I will dig into the mindset of bloggers and see what keeps us up at night. During my long corporate finance career, many things kept me awake at night -- too many to list here.

However, now that I've retired from the corporate world and have begun this crazy journey of blogging and affiliate marketing, I have come to discover that worrying at night is not exclusive to just the corporate world but is something that impacts us all, in different ways -- no matter what you do in life or what stage of life you are in -- there are things that sit in our minds and keeps us up at night.

After talking to many blogger colleagues, here are some common concerns that bloggers may have and what keeps them up at night.

It's important to note that different bloggers may have varying worries based on their niche, goals, and circumstances.

Here are a few common worries that bloggers experience:

  1. Content quality: Bloggers often worry about creating high-quality, engaging content that resonates with their audience. They may stress over finding fresh ideas, conducting thorough research, and delivering valuable information.
  2. Audience engagement: Bloggers may worry about attracting and retaining an active and engaged audience. They might be concerned about low comment counts, lack of social media shares, or declining reader interaction.
  3. Generating traffic: Bloggers typically aim to increase traffic to their blogs. They may worry about driving organic traffic through search engine optimization (SEO), promoting their content effectively on social media platforms, or getting their articles featured on external websites.
  4. Monetization and income: Many bloggers aspire to monetize their blogs, either through advertising, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, or selling products/services. Worries may revolve around generating sufficient income, finding suitable monetization strategies, or maintaining a stable revenue stream.
  5. Time management: Blogging requires juggling multiple tasks, such as writing, editing, promoting, and managing the technical aspects of a blog. Bloggers may worry about balancing their blogging responsibilities with other commitments, especially if they have a full-time job or other personal obligations.
  6. Competition: The blogging space can be highly competitive, with numerous bloggers vying for attention in the same niche. Concerns about standing out from the competition, developing a unique voice, or dealing with imitators may arise.
  7. Technology and website maintenance: Technical issues like website crashes, security breaches, or plugin conflicts can cause anxiety for bloggers. They may worry about keeping their blogs up-to-date, implementing necessary updates, and ensuring a smooth user experience.
  8. Writer's block: Bloggers may experience writer's block, struggling to develop new ideas or feeling uninspired. The fear of running out of fresh content or being unable to produce compelling articles can be a common worry.
  9. Feedback and criticism: Bloggers expose their work to public scrutiny, making them vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Worrying about receiving negative comments, dealing with trolls, or fearing their content may not meet audience expectations is common.
  10. Staying relevant: Blogging trends and audience preferences can evolve rapidly. Bloggers may worry about staying up-to-date with the latest industry developments, adapting to changing content formats, or maintaining relevance in their niche.
What About AI?

Oh yeah...many bloggers will indeed worry about the development of AI; although the extent and nature of their concerns may vary, here are just a few reasons why bloggers might have worries related to AI:

  • Content automation: AI-powered content generation tools, including language models, can automate certain aspects of content creation. Many worry that this could lead to a saturation of AI-generated content, making it difficult for their work to stand out or compete with automated content.
  • Authenticity and trust: Bloggers often aim to establish trust and credibility with their audience. The rise of AI-generated content can raise concerns about the authenticity of information, potentially undermining confidence in blogs and online sources.
  • Data privacy and security: Bloggers may worry about using AI in data collection and analytics. Concerns can include the potential misuse or mishandling of personal data, invasive tracking technologies, biased information, and the security of sensitive information.

It's important to note that while AI can impact blogging, it can also be seen as a tool that bloggers can leverage to improve their productivity, research capabilities, and content quality. Some bloggers embrace AI as a valuable resource rather than viewing it solely as a threat.

Remember that while these worries are common, they don't necessarily apply to every blogger.

Different bloggers have different goals and concerns, and some may not experience all of these worries -- What keeps you up at night?

You're welcome, Mike, and if you just retired from the corporate world, that is why you feel that way, but that is a good thing! We should always try our best, my friend!

Jeff

I agree, Jeff...I just got to learn when a piece is right, and when one TRULY needs more work -- beside losing sleep, it hurts productivity as well.

-Mike

Ah yes, I know what you mean there, Mike: Paralysis by Analysis! I've been guilty of that a time or ten!

Jeff

Yep…that’s it, 100%. I think we all at one time or another have been guilty of it, Jeff!

Thank you!

Great post, Mike! There are many things to worry with this and in general, especially if you’re conscientious or perfectionistic by nature. But at the end of the day all we can do is our best.

Susan

Thank you for reading my blog, Susan...I try my best to too much, but I guess it is in my nature and being a perfectionist!

You bet, Mike! I can relate to that as well. It's pretty common. Have a good day :-)

Great post, Mike!

There’s always something to worry about, so it’s best to focus on opportunities for success, especially at bedtime. 😎

I’m already using AI productively, so it doesn’t really bother me.

As AI continues to evolve, discovering new use cases will be fun.

Rock On! 🤘

Hi Frank...

In my case, perfectionism plays a big role in my worries. I always worry if something I wrote was good enough, or relevant enough to rank. I get in my own way at times. LOL.

-Mike

Hi, Mike

I know exactly what you mean, but sometimes it just has to be "close enough for Rock and Roll" and keep moving on. 😎

Self-confidence can play a significant role once we know what we're doing.

Frank 🎸

Thank you for reading my blog, Frank..I appreciate your feedback, comments and support!

Hi Mike,

I like to add "self-doubt," that's another worrying thing. I experience that too. When I write, I often wonder if my readers will like my post. Did I write enough? Should I write more or stop? Does my blog post meet the helpful content for Google? Many questions ramble in my mind. Also, how long it takes to index? Many questions that I have rambled on and on when I am trying to sleep. I put a pillow over my head, and tell myself, "hey, stop thinking." Thanks for sharing this post.

Great add, Brenda...and I too share that worry. I'm always way to worried about if I made a piece compelling enough, or if I missed something crucial.

Thank you for your input!

-Mike

Sure thing. Sometimes, I have to discipline myself to stop doing that. It's good to know we aren't alone in this.

No you not...I suspect there many others out there like us -- in my case, perfectionism plays a big role.

-Mike

Me too. I constantly go back and try to add things or feel like something needs to be added. It may not be good enough, and I need to do more. But there is a point when you must stop and leave it as it is—wasting time. I should be moving on writing more blog posts than focusing on a few that I felt weren't good enough or helpful enough. That's a struggle I have dealt with recently with a couple of blog posts for my website.

You sure your name is not Mike? I have struggled with perfectionism, my entire professional career -- and it has carried over to WA.
