Thanks for all the comments and input. Based off of the reviews I've read, I don't feel it's right OS for me. I may have 6 to 10 windows open at any given time. It looks like a bad experiment to me lol.
I spent some time playing with Windows 8 at Staples. I really didn't care at all for it.
Support for Win XP ends in April 2014. I was looking for an operating system to use after XP. Vista SP2 is supported until 2017.
I thought about Windows 7, but after I ran the 'Windows 7 Adviser' on my computer, it told me some of my older Software Programs, like Microsoft Office 2000, and Outlook Express, are not compatible with Windows 7. I can't afford to buy a newer version of Office or a similar alternative to Outlook express at this time.
I've learned that Windows 8 does NOT support multiple windows!! Well I absolutely need that capability and will avoid Windows8 like the plague.
Here's a link to an unfavorable review that closely describes my feelings about Window 8 operating system: http://goo.gl/mh5nH for those who haven't experienced this operating system yet.
It definitely takes some getting used to but once you get past the initial "Where the heck IS everything!!" it's pretty cool. It is quite a transition, that's for sure, but I like it! :)
I tried a beta version and did not like it at all. Perhaps I didn't use it long enough to get used to it but I did not enjoy the "tile" experience. If I could pick between standard menu or tile based on installation, I might use Windows 8. I enjoy Windows 7 and will not be buying a machine that comes with Windows 8 until I have no other choice. My best deal was to buy a legal copy of Windows 7 Ultimate from Ebay. Like it a lot. Upgraded from crappy Vista and never looked back.
I am using it and I agree, once you get used to it, you will love it. I just happened to get a new Dell and that was what it came with, it seems much better than the last Windows OS, which gave me fits! LOL
I'm not sure how true it is given i also haven't played around with win 8, but i'm told when you buy the cheaper version you only get the basic package, you have to pay extra for the media pack
Ive been on it for a week now and other than bit of tweeking to get wamp server working I love it !!!! Takes a little getting used to but well worth it !

Windows 8 supports as many windows as you want. If anybody says otherwise they're either misinformed or being deceitful.
OK, in a way, it does: if you're using metro apps - which are apps that are optimized for touch - then sure, you can only have one open at a time. Same with any tablet. But you can still run regular programs in the desktop, and have as many going as you want. Actually you can dock metro apps to one of the sides, but it's not extremely useful.
It is different though; I don't think you could say it has a steep learning curve, but you have to get used to the awkwardness of moving around in the start screen. For me, it doesn't make a difference at all, because since Vista, I've almost never clicked on things in the start menu. Just hit the Windows key, type a few letters to search, press enter and your program loads.
Besides the start screen instead of the start menu, the desktop pretty much works the same way as Windows 7 and Vista. I found all my programs worked fine after upgrading from 7. Even old programs - you can set compatibility mode just like you've been able to for a while.
My recommendation would be, if you're going to get a new computer with a touch screen, go for it. It works really nice with a touchscreen. Otherwise, you may or may not want it. I personally like it a lot and definitely recommend it, but of course it isn't for anybody.
