One not so often talked about marketing technique is press releases.
Press releases are hot and one of my secret deadly weapons for getting my newest sites indexed and ranked in the search engine right away.
I will go as far as saying writing a press release and using a quality service will get your site indexed and ranking within 24 hours of going live 100% of the time.
Another good reason for using press releases is they are picked up by news and can generate instant traffic once published.
Press releases rank high in the search engines for keywords you have no chance ranking for right away with submitting an article or building a hub page or squidoo for a day or two.
Press releases can also give you a lot of backlinks to get your SEO offers started.
Case Study
On a newly registered domain name, I built a 10 page website. About a week later I submitted a pr release announcing my website.
My site landed on page 3... 24 rank about 4 hours after the press release went live for a keyword with 400,000 exact match competition.
This is a huge kick start.
The press release itself generated my site 1357 page views the same day. I made a handful of sales off this traffic.

That is awesome! Mind saying what site you used for the press release? Was it free or paid? I have tried many free PR sites, but they haven't been very helpful and got me zero extra visitors. But congrats on your success!

If you post in the right places as well, you can get many backlinks towards your site as well.
I couldn't agree more. I love press releases. I started using press releases with a business I own about 5 years ago to keep site search high. I couldn't believe the results. I use them whenever possible on a product. I use only free services, no premium, and have had really good results.
