What type of learner are You?

One of the things that has always frustrated me is my ability to learn and retain information.

I can sit down for hours and read a book from cover to cover and retain almost none of it, and this got me thinking back to my school days and a technique I learnt from a teacher of mine.

What will help you learn depends on your psychological make up. Some of us are visual learners, some learn best by doing and others are good at learning through listening.

I am most certainly in the listening camp, so I thought I would try a little experiment. When I do a piece of training here, I listen to a specific artist or album of music. Whenever I look at that training, I will listen to the same songs, in the same order. This helps my brain associate those songs with that training.

What I discovered is that by playing those songs away from the training, I was able to recall far more pertinent points of the training than without the music.

So when I am working on SEO aspects of my site, I listen to this playlist and it helps me remember the way in which to correctly do it.

So, give it a go, link a song to a training!

I would love to know how you get on!

I am a visual learner, I have to see what to do, I just can not understand what to do by just reading words.
Show me, and I will remember.

Matt,
Whatever works for you is the best way to try to retain the information you are learning. That's great that you have a system set up that works for you. Keep on doing as you do and you will be fine. Then, add to your techniques that go along with the mood you are in. Good for you. That's fantastic. Keep up the good work.

Donna

Thanks Donna.

I would be interested to learn what techniques other WAers use.

OK, Mat...that works for you, what we call an auditory learner...but what of the kinesthetic learners or the visual learners?.. an approach MUST be universal enough to be INCLUSIVE when it comes to the epistemological value of learning...

I would be very pleased if you could share any ideas for those of us who are Kinesthetic or visual learners, Arthur.

By now a good many of us should know what approach works for us, be that pictorial explanations and graphics or actually getting into the "nitty gritty" of a task.

I was merely attempting to put my point of view as to what works for me across, but thank you for your input.

I do understand that no one approach can suit everyone.

Excellent! And THAT is exactly the point! Each of us must task ourselves with finding that which works best for us..just as YOU have...not too many "learners" our there are as perceptive or as introspective as you...so kudos to you, Mat...others should take heed...
