U.S. Navy Seals
Dave Roever Story
It was a fourth of July party at church on a Sunday back in the ' 80's. Dave Roever a former Navy Seal and now evangilist was the guest speaker in our church. The church could seat five thousand but usually had around three thousand in attendance.
Dave was a former Navy Seal that had served in Viet Nam. He was part of a Navy Seal team that served on a gunboat that went up a Viet Nam river in a heavy combat zone.
Being a devout Christian and a pastor's son he had an interesting relationship with the other Seals. As told by Dave he had names for some of the team members. Pervert no. 1, pervert no. 2 and pervert no. 3.
I will tell this story to the best of my recollection as told by Dave. You can find him on Utube as well as his evangelistic organization. ( He speaks to kids at schools and gives an anti-drug and positive message.)
On a day when they were going up the river they came under fire. All but the boat's pilot were exposed. As Dave pulled the pin on a grenade it went off right next to his face and blew him in the water.
It took his ear and much of his face. He tells how the phosphorous from the grenade burned a hole in his throat so he could breath. He was picked up by a helicopter and they thought he was dead.
Well back to our Sunday Fourth of July Celebration. Dave was speaking when into the church walks up an amputee. He was Mickey Block, from a family that were neighbors to my family from years back. It turns out that Mickey was one of the perverts that Dave had served with. They both thought the other was dead. Mickey had heard Dave on the radio and came for a reunion.
This was one of the most moving Fourth of July Celebrations I had ever seen. It brought tears to my eyes.
You can find Dave Roever on U Tube. Mickey Block wrote a book but has since passed away.
To all our vets, and the sacrifices they have made many thanks. If anyone knows of good vet organizations where the majority of the money gets to the needs of the vets please pass it on.
Dave Roever has a wonderful story about how his wife stood by his side and he is also a very accomplished piano player. When he plays by ear he takes off his prosthetic ear and plays with it.

Marty,
What a great story and I sure can understand how you would have tears in your eyes hearing that story.
Thanks for sharing
Sheila
Thank you Sheila. I was in church when Mickey Block just came in and limped up to the front unexpectedly. He had heard Dave on a local radio show, As far as I remember this was a total surprise.
yes we all need to remember what some have suffered in order to give us this freedom and give thanks all the best
So true Maxim. I just checked your profile page and see you are a Cowboy and Lions fan. As a fellow Lions fan I feel your pain. You must have enjoyed that playoff game last year.
Dave Roever was the Dallas Cowboys chaplain back when this story took place. He arranged a basket ball game between the Cowboys and our pastors. It wasn't the front line players but it was fun.
The Cowboys won that one too. Thanks for stopping by.

Inspirational story we have many people who sacrificed so much to help keep our way of life and enjoy freedom "lest we forget"
OMG! I know Dave... I seen him live decades ago! Yes, his testimony is incredible. That he lived was a miracle. I forget what percent of flesh was lost when the gernade blew up?
At That time he called our Church his home church and we saw him often. There have been many changes since then and we have moved but he is still active and puts out a message for vets on Face Book on Veterans Day. I have to check for it.
Small world Ed thanks for stopping by.
Wonderful story Marty. If you write content like that for your website you WILL have a winner. Nicely written. You have a knack. DAN
Hi Marty, Glad you shared. We are in a small world. You never know who God will have you cross paths with. Dave.
