Is It Cheating?

Hello and welcome to Day 11 of this 30 Day Email Marketing Challenge.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post...today I want to show you a simple strategy which will keep you from staring at a blank screen ever again and will at the same time help improve your copy writing skills over night!

When I tell what this is..you might think it is cheating...but honestly it's not..and I will fully explain why it is not as we go further into this post :)

Have you ever heard the term "Swipe File"?

A swipe file is the name given to a collection of other people’s emails and marketing messages that you collect and compile for your own use....uhhh I hear you screaming plagiariser! plagiariser! at the screen :)

Let me be very clear, we're never going to copy and plagiarise other people’s emails. We're using them only as a starting point, as a way to get ideas for our own emails.

When you come across an email with a great headline that’s grabbing your attention, or has an interesting call to action or hook or all the above, save it to a folder on your computer.

I myself have been doing this regularly for at least the last 2 years and have amassed quite a collection to date. If I'm ever feeling vague when I sit down to write an email all I need do is peep inside my swipe folder and I get an instant injection of inspiration.

What you'll quickly find is that the topic really is unimportant. You can save a powerful subject line from literally any niche and then re purpose it to create an email in a totally different niche and it will fit perfectly.

For example, we may start with an email subject line that says “5 Tips For Relieving Lower Back Pain” and change it to “3 Tips For Curing Sleep Deprivation”. As you can see we're not copying the subject line at all, and we're certainly not copying the entire email. All we are doing is reworking it for your own purposes and for our own niche.

The beauty of this strategy is that it doesn't have to stop with subject lines, CTA's (Call To Actions) or hooks..we can also learn so much by simply studying how someone else structures their emails. Pay close attention to how often marketers combine content and offers and how they schedule their emails.

So, I hear you asking...where can I find all these attention grabbing emails?

Now this is the clever albeit slightly sneaky part of this strategy!

I have done this in the past and I know that other individuals have done it to me :) - which is a compliment when you stop to think about it.

Your best source of emails is obtained by signing up for the lists of other smart marketers!

Investigate some of the big names in the niche you’re promoting...seek out your competitors and sign up to their lists.

Put a little time aside each week to check through the emails you’ve received and add them to your swipe folder.
