Hi there

I've just changed themes and have switched to Astra.

I created a child theme for my previous theme and I was wondering if it's necessary to create anot

Child themes were something that was needed if you were going to make behind the scenes code changes to the theme. Today though, you don't really need a child theme anymore.

If you still want to make code changes to your theme, there are plugins out there that will help you do this. Code Snippets for one.

If you have just changed themes you might want to check out the Kadence theme before settling for Astra. It includes a whole host of features in the free version. Its also easy for the less technical person if you don't dabble with theme customisation's much.

Great stuff. When was the theme launched? Is it safe to trust it since it seems it hasn't been around for long? Do you use the theme yourself?

I've just switched themes, If I keep changing themes, does this not pose the risk of having my site "broken"

I have to ask these questions, Mark, surely I'm considering your suggestion but need more information before making any decision.

I've just looked it up on google the theme seems fairly new and there's too much hype about it.

Your input is much appreciated.

Yes, you should always create a child theme for your themes so that any updates you make do not get wiped out them the theme authors push new versions of their theme.

Thanks Dale but after switching themes I still have the child theme for the previous theme active.
Do I need to deactivate it and reinstall it to link it to the new theme?

I'm a bit confused.

Each theme needs its own child theme.

So let's say you're using GeneratePress. You would create a Child Theme for GeneratePress & then activate the Child. This would display your main GeneratePress theme, but changes would be saved in the Child version to prevent updates wiping them out.

If you add a new theme, you would need to create a new Child Theme for that theme & then activate the Child theme.

I get all that. It's just that the child theme configurator for the previous theme is still active despite the changes. I would like to know if I need to deactivate it first and start all over again installing the child theme configurator for the new theme because I've tried installing the plugin but it' indicates that the plugin is active.

What do I do.....?

yes you do. The child theme you had will not work with another theme. you need to remove the existing one.

Thanks Mark

Hi, this resource may help you

We also recommend keeping the TwentyTwenty theme for back up.

Ok great. Does it mean each time I change themes I should also create a child theme along?

No I don't. However I keep my back up.

Ok let me understand you. Do you mean that since I've created a child theme before switching themes. The previous child theme I created for a different theme still applies with the new theme?

Then I can continue with the customization without any worry that each time I update the theme the changes I have made to my site wont be affected?

Is there any impact in terms of deleting an already published article although not indexed yet?

I value your opinions..., thank in advance

Maggie

Thanks, Guys. Its my first content it was never indexed and needs a bit of work which I'm not ready for now. I did copy it and saved it somewhere as I do with the other content, just in case something goes wrong with my website.

I appreciate your responses...

You might want to re-edit it, so you can keep it. You put in all that work, it would make sense to improvise it with some more details. But if you don't mind, you can delete it knowing that it's not yet indexed by google. It's not going to be an impact. All the best!

If you are not happy with it then there is a good chance that Google won't either, so you'd be better to delete it.

Some good info here, Maggie!

Jeff

As long as it's your content you can do whatever you want to it. If it's a lot of content, copy and paste it into a document and save it

Thanks

Has anyone installed Astra Theme on their website?

1) What's your experience so far?

2) What are the pros and cons of using this theme?

3) Do you get any su

I started with Astra and switched to GeneratePress.
Richard

Lots of people have had issues with the Astra theme lately due to the theme being suspended. I see Abie has already posted an article regarding this.

Personally I would choose a different theme. I use Generate Press and I love it. The premium version allows you to customize just about every area of the site you wish but even the free version offers more customize options than most free themes. It is light weight, quick, can be customized for any niche and is very user friendly.

I have also heard good things about OceanWP theme however I have no experience with that one.

Good luck!
Shannon

Great Shannon, I was doing a research comparing 4 different themes including, Astra, GP, Neve and Ocean Wp. It means Ill try out one of the said themes and make a decision interms of switching.

Thank you so much for input.

Feedback via your other question. However, Astra site is still running, unaware of their position. I would update this comment once I know more.

I did a search, this post updated two day later
https://wptavern.com/astra-theme-suspended-and-reinstated-themes-team-works-toward-delisting-strategy-for-guideline-violations
https://impress.org/astra-suspension-reinstatement-questions-wordpress-community/

Me personally, I would not go built my site knowing there may be hiccups or not along the way. I would use GeneratePress instead for piece of mind. However, that's totally up to you.

Thanks Abie
It seems they have been reinstated although delisted and/or deranked from the top theme list according to this link you've provided.

I'm not sure if I should wait and see what transpires or should I try out another theme, in regard to switching...

What are other critical things to look for in a theme other than page builders and site speed?

Ultimately we all want the site that's running smoothly and is SEO-friendly

I think others have covered everything ;-).
Richard

site speed and mobile friendly apprear to be the most important things to google at the moment....
good user interface - easy navigation - indepth information- answers to their problems are the bits for the visitors....and speed of site and readable on a mobile......
so a not cluttered site ( mobiles have a small screen)
clear menu structure - they need to find other information
good internal linking
i would still go for astra or generatepress or oceanwp as three lightweight and fast themes capable of being moulded into most niches....
visitors are after answers to their problems...so a plain site with the answer they want will do most....
good luck with your selection
phil

Awesome, I'm currently changing themes I was doing the comparison between those themes you've mentioned including Neve and their pricing structure although I'll go for a free theme at this point and will upgrade later.

Astra seems to have caught my attention.
Thanks for your input, Feigner.

astra have been a bit naughty recently and may not be in the wordpress repository - but are still updating their theme ...
i stil use it and wil lcontinue to use it as it seems a very good theme
combine this with a plugin like site origin css and you can change most things on your site for free....
remember as your site ages to try out new themes in a test site - there are plugins that will create dummy content to show you what it looks like....
with astra you can install the theme pack plugin and see what can be achieved with page builders - even the block editor.....
always useful to test it before committing to your main site - and remember to take a backup just in case....

Yes, I was really interested in the theme especially since I heard good things about this it.

Now that it has been reinstated although delisted as one of the popular themes, it seems, as you've also highlighted that it will continue to be updated.

It doesn't seem like those who already employ the theme have much to worry about since the theme will continue operating, however, I wonder if its a good move on my part to make the switch after this scandal.

Whats you're your take on this?

i would say they have learnt their lesson - adding affiliate links within the theme is not a good idea - and i din't think they will do it again.
personally i have stayed with them and will continue to do so until they stop- which i hope is a long time away....

Ok ....thanks Feigner

Hi Feigner
I would like to view your site and see the layout of your theme-Astra and other things, if you dont mind.

I was just doing the test driving to familiarize myself with the theme before I can switch themes.

I hope this doesn't bother you.

Thanks in advance

Maggie

the latest one i have used this for is filsphilosophies.stan-tech.com
i used one of the starter templates
it is just a site for random things i have done and feel that others will find interesting

Ok great. I see your site is powered by generatePress. Do you have a site that is powered by Astra...that's the one I was test-driving...I just want to see how it looks like in a real-life situation...?

sorry - i tend to play with themes - it is now powered by astra - so you can see that it really makes little difference
but for the standard site i would go for astra free with more customization.

I see. I'm sorry for too many questions. I have to ask. Did you install Astra on an already existing site, more like changing themes? Did you ever have an incident in which your existing content was overwritten in the process of importing the template(s) to your site? How did you resolve the issue?

you can install another tamplate on an existing site
your content is safe
what might change and need a bit of work is the header image menus and anything styled by the theme - so be prepared for it
what you could do is to make a complete bckup from the allinone wp migration tool then add that to a test site and change the theme - see what happens so you are prepared on your main site

Ok Thanks. That's what I've anticipated....the widget, menu and customisation, that they will be affected by the theme change. Atleast the content is safe, does this include comments as well?

I did install updraft plus...but because there was not much work done on the test site...it was not impacted by the change of themes.

I guess I will just take the plunge as long as the site is backed up.

Thanks for the heads up

all the comments will stay intact - this is treated the same as articles
most should be ok but there will always be a little bit of adjustment
good luck with the update

Thank you Feigner

Is it extremely light, fast, well coded, SEO optimized, flexible, customizable, adaptable and translation ready. More important responsive i.e. mobile friendly.

Great stuff, thanks Abie. Among other things, astra is said to be lightweight, less than 50KB, if Im not mistaken.

Thanks for your input.

You are so very welcome.

Hi, I don't use Astra, I have GeneratePress Premium & Divi full version. Also Elementor free version for now.

Elementor and GP premium work well together.

Please check below link

Thanks for the heads up. I've already asked the next question about Astra on another thread, thanks for covering that up here.

Hi there

I recently got a message that my dropbox is full and can no longer sync new files, as a result, there'll be no backup for additional files online neither will I

Good question

Great question and great answers

Unfortunately no, there is nothing else that you can do except upgrading.

I find that their price is pretty steep compared to Onedrive (that includes a Terabyte for free with the subscription of MS Office and you can have up to five accounts in your family so that's 5 Terabytes!).

Since I use MS office on a daily basis and I pay $99 per year already, I moved everything over to Onedrive 🙂

Thanks Blanchard, yes the price is quite steep. Is it possible to switch to different cloud storage for backup?

As Catherine said... download, delete from Dropbox and upload where you want

Maggie you can download them from Dropbox to you PC and then delete them from Dropbox because you no longer need them there

Thanks Catherine, how do I do that? Can I switch to a different cloud storage perhaps? Is this possible?

Yes yo can and I am not the most techie person in the world, but buy cheap external drive on a keyring and download it from the Dropbox folder and then upload it somewhere else to one drive for instance . or actually in the case of putting it onto one drive you can transfer from dropbox directly to one drive directly on your PC

Thanks
