Business or Art?
Seems to me there are two main types of blogs (this isn't my original idea I ripped it off from somewhere):
Business, the kind that purely exist to make money and
Art, the way in which the blog author expresses their creativity and personality.
Of course the two can mix, business blogs need to be very creative to stand out and artistic blogs can make money but that's not the point of my post.
The point is, I joined Wealthy Affiliate to see if I could make my first ever dollar online, purely a business proposition. Yet... a couple of weeks in and I find all my writing is creative, pushing more into the art side of things.
Maybe its because my "niche" (not sure you could call it that the way I'm writing it) is very personal to me, and something I have learned a lot of tough life lessons though. I believe I can monetize my blog eventually but it will be a 'long game'.
I do have a vision of it being a massive success both commercially and how it can touch people's lives.
So I'm curious.
Has anyone else set out to create a business based affiliate website and ended up more with more a creative writing endeavour? I am trying to blend the two, perhaps all I need to do is keep writing and whatever form my site intends to take will emerge.
Wherever it goes I am having the time of my life creating it, and even if I don't make a dollar it's been well worth it. I'm planning to stay a member of this community for a long time.

I like you attitude, and you seem to enjoy writing. Writing is important to your success online, and you will find a way to blend your skill into a money making machine. If you have a opposite, it's me. I have a masters degree in BS but have a hard time putting the BS on paper. You have a wonderful and productive day.

You know I don't see myself as a writer but when I sit down in front of the computer I don't seem to have too much trouble bashing out 500 words a night - for now at least while it's all new and exciting.
I'm pretty green to be giving advice but that would be it if you're having trouble - write 500 words, and 500 words only a day, every day.
You'll find you have to come up with a pretty compelling piece of work within that limit, your mind will be fresh as its about an hours writing or so, and what's more your subconscious will be thinking about how to continue your stuff the next day. It really does build momentum. (I might turn that into a blog post hmm)

I wonder if you'd be better off just using Google ads and not trying to sell anything at all on your site so that nothing affects you speaking totally truthfully and with no agenda?
I'm thinking of possibly doing that myself. I think if you have to find things to sell it puts pressure on yourself to change your message a bit.

I understand what you're saying, but in my case there are a lot of materials I used to help me get over anxiety, and continue to use to get more out of life every day.
The temptation could be once we've built up an audience to endorse everything under the sun in order to make money, but longer term that will compromise the integrity of the site and the message as you rightly point out. So I wont be just reviewing every book or audio track under the sun!
I think the solution is to write honestly and from the heart, and if you are providing a service that helps people the financial rewards will flow from that. Probably more of a 'long game' than a make money online site but for me I can only write what I know!
As for AdWords personally I hate those things I reckon they make a beautifully designed site look ugly. They always annoy me too!
