Trip to Bangkok

I’ve traveled outside the country before, but always with family or friends. Traveling alone? I’d never dared to do that in a foreign country.

So on the 12th of this month, I boarded a plane, first to JFK, then to Qatar, and finally to Bangkok, Thailand, excited and a little nervous. I had done some research beforehand, but my understanding was limited and biased. I expected Bangkok to reflect the tired stereotypes of a “third-world” country: crumbling buildings, elderly people begging on the streets, rundown neighborhoods, and workers commuting by bicycle. How naïve and prejudiced I was.

What I found instead was breathtaking. Bangkok has more high-rises than I’ve seen in New York City.

Modern, beautifully designed buildings housed businesses so inviting they caught your attention even if you didn’t need their services. Men and women were well dressed, smiling, and walking with purpose. Motorbikes zipped through traffic, eco-friendly cars waited at stoplights, and the city felt vibrant, polished, and alive—far beyond anything I had imagined.

The markets overflowed with beautiful, high-quality products. I shopped, ate more fresh fruit than I ever have, and indulged in plenty of massages. What fascinated me most was how far my dollar stretched. Street vendors and small shops sold food, fruit, massages, and hair services everywhere. A fresh coconut cost about 64 cents. An eight-mile cab ride was $1.50. A high-quality dress was $10. A two-hour massage cost $15.

Now I understand why the airport was filled with visitors. Bangkok is not poor or destitute. It offers an exceptional experience—beautiful surroundings, quality products, and remarkable affordability.

If ever you have an opportunity to travel, take the trip to Bangkok!

Thanks for sharing Linda!

Its on my list with the rest of the world and the moon and Mars... :-)

I have traveled the world and whether male or female we need to be very cautious. There are real dangers out there.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.

Yes, the moon is also on my list for sure. But first, at least 50% of Earth... then I can start dreaming louder about going to the moon. And hopefully, the technology will be there to beam me up faster than taking a slow flight there.

2

Yes. Beam me up Scotty!

What kinds of things do you enjoy the most when traveling?

For me it's collecting experiences, smells, sights, conversations, history, architectures, and observing how others live. The choices they make, how they interact, what they prioritize...etc.

Like comparing Bangkok to Tokyo, is night and day. Bangkok felt like NYC, busy people all over the place, loud and hustling; where Tokyo was just as busy but quiet, organized and it felt like meek worker-bees or ant, moving at the sound of an invisible rythm.

When in Tokyo, did you get a chance to go up Mt Fuji? Its an awesome experience. In a few months, they'll have running with the Bulls in Spain... you can watch or participate. I did that 4 years in a row back in the 80's.

Currently I live in the Philippines.

I went by end of April and it was clouded. I did go as close as i could to it but didn't climb Mt. Fuji. Word on the street is that around Aug-Oct is the best time to visit and climb the mountain. That's on my todo list.

Philippines!!! My sister asked where was my next adventure and Philippines was my response. So we might see one another IRL!

My family and I live on the Island of Cebu.

Manila is very crowded. Lots of air pollution...etc. My wife and daughter are planning to go to Oslob soon where you can see the Humpback Whales and even swim with them if you like.

English is a 2nd language here so that helps communicating with people.

Let us know when you do come even if you don't get to Cebu.

Mel

2

All this is great information! Swimming with the whales sound so much fun! I think I'll plan on visiting Cebu!

2

Wonderful Linda! Let us know when you might be coming.

Merry Christmas!

Mel

2

I will definitely do that! Thank you. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well!
