October website income report

October whizzed by and I really didn't have time to add as much content as I'd have liked. Still, my site is largely populated with most of the basic content that I wanted to add and I've hit a bit of a brick wall in writing terms. My "day job", i.e. my real job, teaching, is inevitably taking up most of my time at this time of year.

Also, my Mum's been ill and so I've had to spend a lot of time driving to her, looking after her and staying with her where I don't have a computer to use has simply meant it's been impossible. But the internet will always be there and my Mum won't, so that's just how it is.

So, as for income and outgoings (I'll do a separate post about traffic).

Outgoings:

One year of WA membership: £281.87

A huge amount of money for me in one go but saving 39% on the year, it's worth it.

No affiliate sales at all yet. Oh well.

Income: total £38.40

AdSense (Google reinstated my account on 17th Oct): £1.86

PubMedia adverts: £6.14

WA comments: £30.40

Balance: -£243.47

Ouch. That hurts. But I shouldn't need to spend anything else until next July when it'll be time to renew the domain registration. Of course, I might decide to invest something in it. Definitely considering either Twitter or Pinterest adverts but I'm shifted my thinking from "I must make this make money ASAP" in July to deciding to treat this first year as a learning experience.

And there's so much to learn. Learning what to prioritize is probably the hardest thing. I'm bombarded by calls to action in my inbox and on my phone. One thing I've learned already is to either follow something up and read it do it right now, or close it/delete it because if it's important then it will reappear. I'd got to a stage where I had 84 tabs open in Chrome and "follow up and sort tabs" as a reminder in my calendar that I just couldn't get through. So I've closed them all and am sort of hitting reset.

I pushed my site really hard for the first three weeks of October, using Buffer to tweet my blog posts three times a day, using Tailwind to do the same for Pinterest, and trying to do the same with Facebook.

Black Friday and Christmas coming up mean I've got some serious work to get done but it's all a bit of a struggle right now. All I can do is try my best.

Sorry to hear of your mom being ill. Yes, mum must come first. Your website will always be here waiting for you. I think you are doing great. Take care.

Good afternoon Lisa,

Mums come first.
I think you are doing great. Soon you will add a 0 or 00, you will see.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Wow, £ 38.40! From my viewpoint, that's a miracle. To me it demonstrates someone who has grasped the basics, applied them and achieved a concrete result. The amount is irrelevant, that you have created income from a laptop in such a short time is inspiring. I started in May, got listed quickly but ever since seem to have done a lot of nail-biting and rethinking and not much else, I will be following.
Simon.

Hi Simon,
Thank you so much for that. One thing I'm realising is that running your own business can be a very lonely experience unless you (I) make the effort to reach out to other people for support. Not something I'm very good at but I'm so glad I've found this place which is full of helpful and supportive people like you.
Good luck with it,
Lisa

You have worked well despite outside forces which are out of your control. As my son says 'control the controlables' and the rest you deal with. We all have other influences on our work online and its how we deal with them that makes us better. No point stressing and you have a really great attitude, your mom comes first of course !

We all have too much to do, so much we want to do today, but you re right, it will all still be there tomorrow when you get a bit more of it done.

I fly to Kenya on Thursday for 3 weeks of tennis tournaments for my son, so my time is going to weird but Ill do what I can an not stress.

Have a great week !

Helen

Hi Helen, and thank you. Yes, we have to just do what we can do and try not to stress about everything else. I hope you enjoy Kenya.

You're so right to put your mum first. You only get one mum, and I miss mine every day. Don't worry about falling behind as you can soon catch up. I also use pinterest as a main source of traffic. Facebook is good as well. Sounds like you've already done well with some income:) Best wishes. Kathy

Thanks very much Kathy. Exactly, I only have one Mum and the internet will (have to) carry on without me and still be there when I can come back to it. Lisa

Hello Lisa and thanks for sharing your progress.
You are making ground and we wish you the very best.
It is about finding the pace that best suits you.
All the best for the week.
Darren & Nicola :)

Hi Darren & Nicola,
Thank you for that. All the best to you too :)
