Should You Fake it Until You Make it?

Fake it till you make it" is a common phrase used to encourage oneself or others to act as if they are already successful or knowledgeable in a particular field, even if they are not.

The idea is that by acting as if you are already successful or an expert, that it can lead to a more confident approach and potentially attract opportunities that might not have otherwise come their way.

When following this approach as a blogger, it suggests that you should present yourself as knowledgeable and authoritative, even if you are still learning and growing. It's about projecting confidence and demonstrating an understanding of the topic, even if you are not an expert yet.

I know I've personally struggled with this dilemma - should I "fake it till I make it"? It's a common question that I've seen spark a lot of debates, especially on social media.

On one hand, some see "faking it till you make it" as a way to stay motivated and determined on their journey as a blogger. But on the other hand, some argue that this approach can come across as inauthentic and raise questions about credibility and ethical responsibility.

So what do you all think? What's your thoughts on this from a blogger's perspective? Is this a good mindset to have as a blogger?

My opinion is that I believe we should have the “I am a winner mindset”, but to fake saying in a blog “ I have made a million dollars “is a little risky (at least). Mainly because people these days are very astute and can pick up insincerity at a drop.
However it has worked for some and probably many. But I’m not clever enough to carry on any long term deceit. Lol.

I like your winner mindset. I believe instead of the 'fake it to make it' mindset, blogger's should have the 'believe it till you achieve it' mindset. It is far more effective!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

It worked for me well over 30 years ago when I started my business! It just depends on all of the circumstances involved!

Jeff

I think it all in the perspective of what the phrase means to you. While I'm not fond of the expression, I am glad that you found success in using it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me on this topic.

You're very welcome, Lisa, and I completely understand why you might not like it.

Hi Lisa, I do not support "faking it until you make it." For me, it shows that the person is dishonest and looks deceptive. Thumbs down! 👎 Why would people even want to consider doing that? Disclaim it—bad idea. As you stated, the idea is to build trust and authority but to" fake it until you make it" is not a motivating kicker. It's the total opposite of that. I've been in the business world in sales for a long time. We were told never to use that thinking and always be honest with our customers. MLM is famous for using that line. I was in MLM, and I never did that with my customers. Feel free to use our thoughts in your blog post about it.

Thank you for your thoughts! And I do agree with you.

I'm not at all fond of the expression.

I believe from a bloggers standpoint that instead of using the phrase ' Fake it till you make it' you should use the phrase 'Believe it till you achieve it'

I have heard that practice and I believe MLM companies do that!

I believe you show your business as it is!

Dishonesty is deception. You don’t want to lead anyone along. Let your audience know that blogging takes time to succeed. But allow them to see it grow. Allow them to see how you work hard to grow it.

Misleading is pretentious. It won’t amount to anything but failure!

Cheers,
Maria 🌹

I agree! I believe that regardless of what niche you are in you should always be honest and transparent.

Honesty is the best policy!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!!

I think that faking it until you make it is a good policy for some, as they actually know more than they did in a short while.

I don't think that lying about what you have accomplished is acceptable.
Thanks for the question, I hadn't thought about it in a long while. Once I formed my opinions and personal guidelines I tuned out the idea of fake it till you make it.

I agree, it is never acceptable to lie about what you have accomplished!

Thanks for your feedback!
