Of Course I Deleted Your Comment
Ok this post comes from some of the conversations I've seen in chat, PM's I've received and my own experience. And if you know me by now I say what's on my mind.
By now I think everyone is aware of how important comments are to the SEO strength of your website.
And if you're taking advantage of the give and take comment thread here in the WA, you're one smart cookie.
Oh, and there is something coming from Kyle and Carson regarding a change in the platform for comments, so that's exciting. Kyle did a big tease post about, didn't say much, just that a change is coming.
And this brings me to this post.
I use the give and take comment thread and it works really well.. But what I don't understand are the people that give useless comments and expect a comment in return.
When I get a comment like "Great post I learned a lot" That's a useless non- engaging comment, just like the ones I sometimes get from regular visitors and Non members of the WA that visit my site.
So YES I will delete it and NO I will not return the favor and comment on your site.
Why would I?
When I comment and when I see most others comment - the comments that are left are thoughtful and engaging. Hell I've had fantastic members leave comments 4 and 5 paragraphs long. Now that's a comment!!
My point is, if you can't provide a truly thoughtful and engaging comment they don't expect me or other members to return the favor. Hell don't even ask for a comment in the first place.
We are all here to boost and help each others sites with these comments, so if you're going to use the give and take comment thread - do it with the commitment of providing engaging useful comments.
It's a win - win for everyone.
Small rant over
I believe in you
Leo
Please Note: After all the comments I thought I should add this.
I should have mentioned and been more clear I am speaking to the people that are experienced and know what level of comment is expected within the give and take thread but still provide non-engaging and in my opinion useless comments.
Not the people that are less experienced and may not be aware of the type of comment that is wanted within the give and take comment thread.

Hey Leo !!
... you've got that right!
I've had to delete comments too.
ps - can't wait to see what the "new changes" in the comments platform.
I think Kyle and Carson on working on some sort of comment sharing platform, but that's just a guess.
But no matter what it is - I'm excited too.
I absolutely agree - I engaged iin the website feedback program - left 2 lengthy replies on 2 websites and received a "good site dude" response for all my effort. There must be a better way somehow. Glyn
I know it's frustrating. There are some people I do recognize as useless commenters and when they ask for comments in the thread I simply ignore the request.
Kyle and Carson are working on a new commenting platform - so yes hopefully there is a better way coming
Thanks for posting this. I don't post on the give and take thread as much as it used to because of comments like that. Apparently there needs to be more training about how to leave a good comment.
It's a shame, because this is a benefit to all the WA members.
You would think common sense would apply when it comes to comments - but we all know common sense is not that common.
I think the problem is that people don't understand the point of leaving comments. Or maybe it's just the lack of common sense as you mention.
Love your post, Leo! There's nothing more annoying than getting a comment that says something like, "Well, I see JohnDoe has already given you a good answer to your question."
Why bother?
Everybody here is super busy building their websites and their future. If they are not doing this, then they clearly don't have a clue.
As a matter of fact, I've even recently gotten a comment that was posted twice and by the same person. Sure - we give newbies a break because they are still in the learning mode (and hopefully this will be an ongoing strategy for them). But geesh - anyone who has been here any length of time should know better.
Now - having had this small rant of my own, I will bow out of this thread before somebody else has an entirely different view and takes me to task over it. I don't have time for this kind of bickering either. :-)
Hey I feel ya, and I feel for the frustration of others who, like you leave great comments and get squat in return.
I'm looking forward to what's coming from Kyle and Carson regarding the new comment platform.
Until then have your finger poised over your delete button - lol
Well said Leo. I take my time writing comments, especially on subjects I know nothing about, really annoys me when I get meaningless ones in return!
I know, I take the time to comment and like you there are topics I have no clue about and those are the tougher ones to comment on.
But that's the point of a comment, you can ask questions too - not just blindly say "wow you know a lot, blah, blah , blah

I agree completely.
There is another area where people do the same thing - when giving site feedback. It is so frustrating to get feedback , "Great site, blah, blah" so that it reaches the min 250 words.
I usually leave 3 to 4 paragraphs of feedback and was getting "Great site" feedback in return. So I made a training on giving feedback Tips on Effectively Reviewing Websites . That was my way of responding. But I don't know how many people have actually seen it or made use of it.
My rant is over as well! :)
Robin
Yep, that's another area. If I'm going to be asked for feedback then that's what you're going to get from me, meaningful and hopefully useful feedback. To me none of this is complicated
All I see when people just give short useless answers is lazy people wanting to get the benefits without the effort. If you can't do what's asks of you then don't do anything.
