How to Make Your New Year's Resolution stick
Am I the only one who feels like they have already royally blown their New Year’s resolutions? Why is it so damn hard to make your New Year’s resolutions stick?
It could in part be wanting the forbidden fruit. It seems like every year that I try to give something up, I just want it that much more.
For example, this year I had two resolutions: 1) I want to make money with my blog, and 2) I wanted to eat a certain diet that consists of avoiding foods with net carbs greater than 7 grams to lose weight.
After eating my lunch today, I wasn’t satisfied. So what do I go and do?
I ordered gourmet donuts through Door Dash.
And I ate them all!
Seriously? It is January 5th! I couldn’t even make it 5 freaking days! I am a grown-ass woman who cannot stick to a diet for a whole week! I felt pathetic. I felt weak. I felt… hungry (damnit I want another donut!)
In previous years that would have been the end of my resolutions. I would feel bad about myself for a few days and tell myself better luck next year.
Temptation: 5,029,743. Me: 0 (obviously I am just guessing here but it feels right!)
This year I don’t want to give up quite yet. But what can I do to help myself stick to my New Year’s resolutions?
I just had a baby in October so obviously my New Year’s resolution is to get back to my pre-baby weight. I HATE exercising so diet is the only way I am going to get there. Clearly, I can’t just cold turkey break up with carbs, though.
When I was sitting on the couch watching TV and eating my delicious, heavy on the carbs, donuts I saw a commercial about Nicorette gum. It talked about instead of quitting cold turkey to just start quitting gradually. Set small goals that you can stick to instead of a huge lofty goal that you more than likely can’t do.
Nicorette gum really gets me.
I am a weak human who cannot just decide to do something and that’s that. But I am a reasonable human that can make small adjustments as long as they aren’t too inconvenient.
I decided to make smaller New Year’s resolutions that I can actually stick to (probably) that would help me in the long run achieve my real goal.
Goal 1: Drink more water
Everybody knows that drinking more water is good for you. It is also great for managing your weight and controlling your appetite. It is also something that is super easy to do. You don’t have to give anything up. It doesn’t cost money. Just drink more water.
Goal 2: Write at least three blog posts a week
I jammed this bad boy out in 30 minutes so given how many minutes there are in a whole week, this should be achievable!
Goal 3: Order groceries weekly
One of the biggest impediments to me eating better is having food at home. I despise going to the grocery store. To me, it is literally the worst. Now that I can just order groceries and have them delivered, I can’t use hating the grocery store as an excuse anymore.
Goal 4: Pin or Repin Daily
I love spending time on Pinterest so this one should be a breeze!
Goal 5: Don’t let the groceries I have go bad
Sounds easy enough, right? My plan is to just throw everything that is about to go bad into a soup. I just ordered a sweet new pressure cooker and I love soup – so this should definitely work. I will keep you posted!
And that’s it. I am hoping that if I can stick to these goals that I will just naturally achieve my real bigger goals of making money from my blog and getting back to my pre-baby weight.
I will for sure keep you posted on how I am doing! (Unless I am failing miserably and then we will never speak of this again!)
