How To Improve My Focus

Focus has several definitions depending on whether you are using it as a noun or a verb. I wanted to know how to improve my focus. Here we will look at focus as it applies to blogging and making money on the Internet.

To me, having focus is a clear vision or paying attention to one particular thing. It is very important to learn to develop focus and apply it when working on the Internet.

I'm sure you have done this and so have I. You are sitting at your desk staring at your computer trying to get up the energy to write a blog post.

Or......

Maybe you have an inbox of emails to attend to and the thought of that is really bogging you down. Here's another one....You know you need quality backlinks, but cannot seem to get around to working on getting them.

Have you ever seen a little-wooded round tuit? It is a playful way to say I need to get busy and focus on getting this done. Here is a round tuit :-)

OK enough on that, let's talk about how to improve my focus so you can get things done and stop procrastinating away your goals of making money online.

10 Ways To Improve Focus

1. Write down what you need to focus on. I’m a big believer in a daily to-do list. I really think these are helpful when it comes to focus.

Looking at your list, and seeing what you need to do next, helps you focus on that specific action item. Once you’re done with it you can cross it off your list and focus on the next item that needs to be done.

This is a great way to focus on achieving items. Plus it’s very liberating as you cross them off your list because you are really in an accomplishment mode.

2. Create a roadmap. If you have a lot of items to do on a specific day, you may want to create a general map that helps keep you on track.

Map out the items that you want to do which will help you visualize what you need to be working on. Then you can refer to your specific daily to-do list as it pertains to each item on your map.

3. Control your surroundings. It’s important that you put yourself in a work environment where you can focus.

I personally have a very hard time focusing on something if I have distractions going on with around me. Creating a quieter work environment, with a little bit of soft background music, really helps set the mood and create the best environment to focus and achieve.

4. Prioritize. This is so important when it comes to focus. If you don’t prioritize things you tend to do things that don’t necessarily need to be done.

You really see this for example when somebody is doing social media marketing. They’ll spend hours and hours hanging out on Facebook or Twitter calling it work when in reality it’s just goofing off. If you prioritize your tasks and do the most important ones first, you’ll always be accomplishing what really needs to be accomplished, like writing a quality keyword rich article.

5. Break time. Do you take breaks? You don’t need to take a long break, but sitting at a desk hour after hour is a sure fire way to kill focus.

Get up every hour and take a short walk, do a little stretching, get a small snack, get a drink of water, not beer. Lol. You may want to take a quick break when you’ve accomplished something on your daily to-do list that you’re feeling especially good about. This gives you a chance to regroup and start your focus on the next action item that needs to be done.

6. Use a timer. Using a timer is an especially helpful tool for bloggers. If you know that you can write a 1000 word article in one hour set your timer for one hour, and sit down and start getting busy.

There’s something about knowing that you’re working up against a timer that forces you to focus and get things done. This is not something you necessarily have to do all the time, but it will get you in an action-mode, and keep you focused on completing the task at hand.

7. Reward yourself. I think it’s important to reward yourself when you’ve done something. i am a big fan of that.

It might be something as simple as meeting a friend at Starbucks for a cup of coffee. Maybe you buy something special for yourself and you know that was made possible because you did focus and complete the goal you had set for yourself. Or sharing a nice glass of wine with your spouse.

8. Outsource. There’s no way that you can be Superman or Supermom. So think seriously about outsourcing part of your tasks.

I’ve always said, do what you like best and outsource the rest. This will help you get everything done and let you focus on specific action items that you enjoy while completing your list with the help of others.

9. Manageable pieces. Sometimes if you have a lengthy item on your list that needs to be done you might want to break it down into more manageable pieces.

For example, let’s say that you know you need a new autoresponder series for an email list you are building. Don't think about the whole series of messages, but focus on each one at a time and give yourself as much time as you need to complete the whole task.

10. Improve skills. Get good at doing things that need to be done. Skills will help you focus better because you are not wasting time figuring things out.

Researching content for a blog article is an example of this. Get to know your best sources for information and how to use them to write blog posts. This is an invaluable skill that will save you a lot of time and really let you focus on writing more and researching less.

Yes, the lazy blogger said that!

Summary: How To Improve Your Focus

These 10 action items answer the question how to improve your focus very well. Every one of them can be used to focus more on getting things done so you can make more money online! After all, that is the main reason we do this right! :-)

Lol, hey Roger, you welcome, thank you for the comment.

Hello Bishop,

The item about using a timer is what I'm doing with the Pomodoro Technique. I set a timer for 25 minutes and take a break for 5 minutes.

This is breaking any task into manageable chunks and the mind tends to wander after 25 minutes anyway.

It allows me to change from different tasks on my to do list and feel balanced working on multiple goals by concentrating on a category one at a time.

I do a task I don't particularly enjoy first or has a high level of anxiety then I reward myself with a task I enjoy doing. I alternate like this until I have completed 5 tasks I normally don't accomplish and see that I have fun doing it because I rewarded myself with something enjoyable to do.

All the best,

Louisa

Louisa, I just started using the Pomodoro Technique myself and it works great, setting it at 30 mins for some and 90 mins for others.

I am not sure if doing the easy ones first is a good idea, but if it works for you, then fine. I have to do the most important ones first before I tackle the others.

I wanted to create an ebook before I do anything else on my website, and it took me two weeks. Was that good? off course not, but you know what? I finally finished my ebook and had to catch up with other parts of my business that I had put on hold. This works for me.

Hello Bishop,

Since I am working on my Ambassador badge, the Pomodoro techniques helps me respond to my emails. It keeps me focused to answer specific emails by category, because my inbox fills up pretty quick at WA.

I like the method and signed up with Focus Booster to do my tracking by client.

It has made me aware of the value of a focused 25 minutes of work with breaks.

It has changed my productivity.

All the best,

Louisa

Yes it is, to keep us on track. A great tool, Focus Booster. Thank you for the input.

Great list, Bishop!

I'm a HUGE fan of writing "To Do" lists. Every now and then, I think I can just "wing it" by not creating a list, but that day is never as productive.

I never used to schedule in breaks, but I had to learn that breaks are critical to me having a productive day. Although I'll be home all day, I'll be squeezing in mini-projects throughout the day, in between my time online, like organizing my DVD's - I already put up the shelves so I'm excited to alphabetize my collection- and organizing the fabrics in my trunk. I used to spend 5 hours just in front of my laptop without a break, but those days are long gone!

I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean by creating a roadmap. Can you clarify, please?

Veronica, I did this weekly back then, but what I find is better for me is working on one project at a time, instead of a different project within the week.

Breaks work for me but sometimes if I step out the house, friends tend to get in the way and I end up extending those breaks for the entire evening. So leaving the house is not such a good thing.

Creating a roadmap. Today if you want to get one premium sign-up. You need to create how you going to accomplish that. First I may need 100 referrals. How do I get 100 referrals? how much is coming from paid and how much from free ads. What paid ads I am going to use and what free ads? You kind of get the picture?

I don't believe in posting and hoping. Glad you stop by.

Ahh... that makes complete sense, Bishop!

So, it seems that instead of just focusing on teh "what", you give as much attention - if not more - on the "how".

I really like that, Bishop. I think I'll let that sit and marinate a bit...

It's only good if you put it into action.

You are so right. but what is the right way of putting it into action?

make a daily schedule and keep to it. I'm about to make a new one for myself ... again lol

Great blog, I particularly like the use of a timer every now and then to sharpen the focus

It works well, especially if you do a lot of social media marketing.

Bishop-

This came at the perfect time. I needed this reminder of ways to help my focus.

Thank you.

Lydia

Hey Linda, I might be different, but do you believe that I write this article because I get this question ask by my newly recruits! Glad that you find it helpful.

You welcome!
