Wordpress Plugins that Slow Down Your Site

Hi Everyone

I'm always looking for ways to speed up my site, which is why a friend of mine just called me to share this interesting post. She knows I'm using SUMO and it appears on this list (well, as SUMOME so this post may be a bit outdated since they changed their name a good few months ago).

10 Wordpress Plugins to Stay Away From That Slow Down Your Site Big Time!

In case you don't feel like going to the post itself, the list is:

  1. Contact Form 7
  2. S2 Member
  3. WPML
  4. Revolution Slider
  5. Sumo(me)
  6. Yet Another Related Post Plugin
  7. Essential Grid
  8. Disqus Comment System
  9. Broken Link Checker
  10. Vaultpress

Fortunately, the only plugin on this list I'm using is Sumo.

But it leads to a dilemma for me.

If I deactivate my Sumo plugin I lose my social share buttons and I assume that I will also lose the count of all the social shares I've had on my posts.

When I switched over to HTTPS I lost all these counts and my site's Domain Authority dropped hugely (I assumed this was the reason).

Also, if I let go of Sumo, I have to choose a new plugin that serves the same purpose as Sumo. My friend suggested I got with JETPACK as it's much more lightweight.

WA Community, I need your help, please.

  • Have any of you found that Sumo slows down your site?
  • Do you agree Jetpack is a better option?
  • Please leave a comment below saying which plugin you use for social shares and why.
  • Anyone know of a way to keep the count of all existing shares when swapping over to a new plugin?

All the best

Thank you for sharing this information.

Pleasure Louisa. Please see my update on 2nd post.

It's a constant problem having the plugins you need without crashing server space limitations.

Thanks Michael, you're so right. I just noticed in Site Health yesterday that my site has 0% for Plugins:
Plugins
Too many plugins can cause slower page load times and deter users from coming back to your site. Keep your plugins below 5 to maximize the health of your site.

A wealth of information in this question AND in the answers. Thank you for posting this Lauren!

Pleasure Sue. Thanks for reading all. :)

I will have to remember this as I will be reviewing my plugins shortly. Thanks

Good afternoon Lauren,

Sorry, I can not help you with this. I have only 4 Plugins and none of them is on the list.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I am not using any of those plugins.

hi there I am using contact form 7 .. would there be an alternative ?

Hi Helen, I'm not sure but before you deactivate and delete contact form 7, I recommend uploading P3 Pllugin Profiler and doing an analysis to see whether it is actually slowing down your site speed.

Brilliant thanks for the suggestion will try it now x

There are several issues with Sumo.

Firstly, members who are not grandfathered into the old free version, will find that after their site receives traffic of c. 1,000 visits a month, they will then have to pay. The pricing starts at $29 a month for the next 5,000 visits, which also needs to be paid annually in advance, ie. it requires an upfront payment of $348 + taxes.

Secondly, Noah, one of the owners of Sumo, did state in a webinar that all free members go to the back of their server queue, which can seriously impact your website load times if you're not a paying customer.

I'd suggest avoiding Jetpack. It is a 14-in-1 bug-ridden piece of bloat-ware, and it's also banned on WA hosting in any case.

If you're looking for social sharing, Social Media Feather https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/social-media-feather/ is popular with many members.

I also recommend that every member install P3 to check their plugins and remove the resource hogs in favour of lighter loaders. https://wordpress.org/plugins/p3-profiler/
