Does a tree falling in the woods make a sound?

If there is no one there to hear it?

Of course it does. But it takes a chainsaw to really make some noise.

This feels a lot like work. But it does come with a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Not only do I get several blog posts out of this activity but there is a bit of wood that can be used once it is dried.

Last night I found a place that I might be able to get access to a wood kiln. Oh happy day! Now I can post about the benefits and problems associated with drying wood in a kiln.

What are you doing to support your online efforts. Do you have bodies of work in your chosen niche to show that you are an authority in your niche?

For those that are wondering, this is a 13 foot piece of yellow pine. Tree diameter is 22 inches. It fell in the woods last fall in a windstorm. There is another 11 foot section before the first crotch so I should be able to get almost 450 board feet out of this log. The 5" thick piece at the bottom of the stack will become fireplace mantles.

I'll be documenting my efforts over at https://woodworkingwarrior.com

I need those planks. Too bad you're so far from here. :)

Thank you for this post. It has really helped me in trying to figure out a niche that is right for me. I believe what you say is true, I should be very knowledgeable about the type of product or products I am marketing and the type of person I am trying to reach. Great post, thanks.

I do some much physical work at my actual post that the last thing i want is more physical work! Great post Labman!

Nice work and website

Wow, Craig! Looks like you've got a huge new project on your hands! Good luck with that. Are you building a log cabin? Alanna

We'll see, I might get enough to build a shop. Time will tell.

I had to do some very minor woodworking for a project my son did for school. While I realize your post above is just an analogy, I really enjoyed it way more than I thought it would. I can see why people really get into it as a hobby. I have a birthday coming up in may just ask for a router and table saw...just because ;)

Great blog! you're getting lots of wood from that tree! will forward the link to my husband, think he will read your blog there.

I’ve always liked the smell of wood even with my pollen allergies.

Didn't get to smell a lot of the pine, I was snorting chainsaw fumes at the time.

lol

Yeah, I guess I can imagine..

At least the planks look great :) Do they make good floorboards if trimmed at the edges?

I'll need to see how they dry. I'm hoping they stay flat. This can be a problem with wide boards that are flat sawn.

Hahaha :)
