While you are idle, I am getting things done.

People wonder what my day to day looks like, so I wanted to explain what a common day in the “life of Kyle” looks like and perhaps it can give you some insight as to why I might be achieving some things that you may not be.

Perhaps you are achieving extraordinary things and by no means am I saying I accomplish more than you, but I think my work habits may be quite a reveal to many of you here that have been told over the years that being successful online looks a little something like this...

Well, it is not this glamorous (although it could be in theory). I am not sure if you have ever tried to be productive while working from a beach chair, it usually does not work out all that well. Beaches are great for reading (which is good for business), but when the work needs to get done you need to access a computer and you need to take the margaritas out of your hand!

So let that be my first lesson, don’t drink tequila and think you are going to create wonderful content!

Before I get started on my “life of Kyle” walk through, I wanted to show you a quote that fits quite nicely with what I am going to be chatting about here.

“It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste” -Henry Ford

Henry Ford, obviously the founder of one of the longest running and most successful brands ever made a frank revelation as to why he perhaps was able to create more success than others.

While others were “playing” (what he refers to as wasting time), he was focusing on getting ahead and building his business.

This most definitely applies to myself and anyone else in life that I have met that has created a business of any level of success.

I also know I am getting things done when others are not.

I am writing this at 12:28am (yes in the morning) on a Monday night. This is not a strange occurrence either, I would say this is quite typical.

I make the most of my time throughout any given day, whether I am sitting at more computer with the sole purpose of getting things done or I am at the gym exercising, I am still retaining focus on business.

Do I relax?

You bet. Probably more than most. To people that know me from the outside, they think that all I do is travel the world. In fact, people make fun of me for "not working" because it appears that I am enjoying work so much that I cannot really be working!

Or can I?

The people that really know me, are those that are aware as to why I have freedom to travel and the freedom to do what I want when I want. It is because I have work ethic. I take advantage of the time when others are watching the hockey game to GET THINGS DONE.

There is a huge misunderstanding about success and how some people can “roam the earth” via their adventurous travelling and still maintain a successful business. It is because when I travel, I am in some way using my experience for inspiration, using my environment for inspiration, and I am still GETTING THINGS DONE whether I am in Victoria, BC (my home) or in Venice, Italy. Absolutely no difference to business other than the location.

Remember, when you are doing something you enjoy it will not feel like work. Quite the opposite actually.

I am always remain connected.

From the desktop, to the kitchen on my iPad, to the coffee shop, to the mobile while I am driving, to the treadmill discussion business decisions on Google Talk with Carson, to vacations, to airports and even air planes (many have likely caught me in chat will I am 30,000 feet in the air). I am always connected and I am always engaged.

That is my life, that is what I love to do. I love to get things done while others are idle (wasting time). While people are reading a gossip magazine or playing games on their iPad on the plane, I am getting things done.

Do I ever take time away from being connected?

I have my definite outlets and my “digital time outs" and this is usually playing sports, watching Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, or another one of my favourite TV series, out for dinner with the wife or friends, or grabbing a few beer and watching the game, I take breaks when I want and where I want.

In fact, I wouldn't trade what I do for any other lifestyle in the world. This is the lifestyle I always hoped for and imagined. It has become a reality and it will continue to remain a reality as long as I continue to get things done while the majority of the general public is wasting their idle time.

If and when my brain feels like it is getting tired of working from one location, I change my location. Often times you will catch me at a coffee shop, at home, at the office, or somewhere else in the world to work.

Influence comes from the strangest places and having the ability to change your environment is something that the Internet allows for and something that this business actually rewards you for. It always makes your business feel fresh and exciting .

Here is my set-up when I am on the go (iPad w/ bluetooth keyboard).

Your activities and your forward mission towards your goals should be a constant focus. If you take the approach of taking advantage of the time that others are merely wasting (almost everyone I know wastes a good deal of the time in which I am productive), you are going to see positive results.

Work also shouldn't feel like work when you are doing something you enjoy. The Internet gives us all the capability to work within a niche that we enjoy and to do work that is rewarding and gratifying.

When you challenge yourself, enjoy the subject matter, are constantly learning new things, and you know that you have unrealized potential that is just waiting to be released, every day is exciting and every minute I spend “working” is enjoyable.

Are You Wasting Idle Time?

My intent of this is to get you thinking about time that you may be wasting or completely idle that you can take advantage of and get things done (that further accelerate your business). A day contains a lot of hours and a lot of minutes, we all waste time but some of us are more productive than others during our spare minutes and hours throughout the day.

Take a look at what you are doing now and work to get things done in 2013 when others are not. You are going to notice considerable results and wonderful success.

Love it, love it, love it!!! Great post and so true!! You deserve all the success in the world!!

We all deserve all the success in the world and I think 2013 is going to be a big year for many folks here at Wealthy Affiliate. Get things done while others are wasting their idle hours...lots will get accomplished and success is the only natural byproduct.

We ALL do :) I think you are right I think 2013 will be great for a lot of us!!

Great Inspiration!!!! Guru springs to mind!!!!

Noooooooo....not the guru word!!!

It's a shame that the word "guru" has morphed from "spiritual guide" into a synonym for online gangster and scammer :(

Kyle, one word for you............thanks.

Two words, no problemo! :) Glad I could provide you with some insight into my daily activities and hopefully it will give many here perspective on what it takes and how awesome things can be when you are enjoying what you do!

I agree! I'm reading this post while in the dentist's chair.

That is awesome! You sound like me!

Have to agree with Kyle there...

Kyle another awesome post, and great point all around, nice shot of the Beach but can't see that being a productive office or working area... Talk about distrations.. LOL

I have tried to work from a beach and it gets tough when you start getting stand in the keyboard. :)

Being on a beach is a reality when you have the freedom to travel where you want and you can escape and be productive from a beach setting (part of the day) whether it be reading or catching up on where your company is at, however you will never find a successful person that sits on the beach all day. They just get to escape to the beach more often as their lifestyle and their business allows them to.

Sand and Keyboards don't get along well for Sure. Yes when one gets to the stage of being able to take a break and listen to the surf can bring you back to gettng down to business. Looking to be able to do that this summer while in Tofino.. Good old Chestermen Beach while checking out the Surfers and Sailboarders. One of my FB FPs is on the place we stay at this past July..

Thanks, Kyle ! I figured you lived in the way you describe, and that you love it. A laser focus, expressed in action.

I once worked with a very productive woman who, when we would pause to gab a bit, would grin and say "Hey girl, we're burnin' daylight!" I still use that phrase for myself, even if the daylight I'm burnin' is the midnight oil.

Love that saying. Too true. I guess mine would be more along the lines of "burning time" as daylight is not required to be connected and productive when you are working on the Internet. ;)

This is very good and very true information. I am going to have my gf read this so she understands why I dont watch tv as much as she does lol.

TV truly is wasted time. We all need an outlet of personal enjoyment and entertainment, but what if this outlet could be the very thing that makes you a full time living. That is where we should all aim to move our skills and efforts towards. It will lead to far more personal contentment.

I watch TV, but it is not a regular habit of mine and if I am watching TV you can most definitely find me with my Macbook or iPad in front of me.

Very nice and definitely something I needed to be reminded of lately. Focus, focus and focus then apply. You must have ESP, your comments and posts seem to mirror my thoughts....eerie, but effective!

I am actually hoping they mirror the thoughts that many people here are having. We can all achieve amazing things if we understand the process and are willing to do a bit more than the "average".

This does not have to be difficult, arduous or feel like work. It can be fun, interesting and intriguing if you are doing something that you enjoy and something that provides you self gratification (which usually tends to come by helping others).

When I was younger and into the music business it became part of me and I a part of it and I would tell people I do not work, I live the business, and I did. I can so relate to this post Kyle, and I hope people get the true point of it.

Live the business, I like that. It is the truth and you will find that people that have true passion about what they do live what they do. It is part of their life and they are the ones that are happy and content with their situation.

Those that just WORK HARDER to the point of stress doing something that they may not be all that passionate about, are those that may be rich in money but lack success in respect to their personal freedom and quality of life.

I know people have always looked up to me... but I've never considered myself an idol... (snark)

ARGH!! Will update. I was sure on a roll of being an idol, maybe it was because of the new season of American Idol coming out lol.

Maybe it's really because you ROCK!
