Why Figuring out Google Is Pointless, and What to Do Instead

Suppose that your friend is on her way to Atlanta from Chicago. You know this, and you also just now recall that you forgot to give her something very important. You want to give it to her personally, and you don't want her to have to come back.

Suppose also that she is a bit behind the times and doesn't have a cell phone. So you decide to try and track her down.

There are a few ways in which you can try to get to her. One way is to attempt to figure out where she is on the way to Atlanta. You think you remember her saying that she wanted to stop in Nashville, but you aren't sure if she will actually go there or not. You're also not sure when exactly she would get to Nashville, or how long she'd stay there.

Clearly this method of tracking down your friend would be quite difficult.

Another method is to go to Atlanta. You know she is headed to Atlanta, and so if you go there too, then you'll have a much easier time tracking her down. This method seems rather promising.

This little thought experiment explains where we are with Google. There are many different technical ways in which we can modify and adjust our content to try to fit Google's advanced algorithms, in order to make our site rank better. The problem, however, is that these algorithms are very complicated and ever-changing.

Its like trying to find our friend on the way to Atlanta rather than going to Atlanta and finding her there.

What we do know is that Google is constantly striving to make its engines more efficient at providing quality content that directly answers what its searchers are seeking. So if we want Google to find our content in the process, we should modify and adjust our content so that it better matches what Google ultimately desires - real content that is really helpful for real people.
