The Body Always Follow The Mind

The year 2013 was the year that I began my bodybuilding career. Although it was short lived (only 4 years) I accomplished a lot in that brief span of time. Not only did I have much success but I also acquired some valuable lessons along the way of that journey.

One of the main lessons that I learned from bodybuilding was discipline. Although I think that discipline is not something that you necessarily learn, rather something you develop, I learned some things about discipline that can only be experience through tough times and hard work.

When I started participating in bodybuilding, I was also working as a personal trainer. What that means is I met a lot of interesting people along the way of my fitness journey

One day during one of my workout sessions I met a guy by the name of Joe Wiest.

Joe was one of those guys where it would not matter what his emotional state was for that day he always had the same facial expression. Sometimes that was a good thing and other times it was kind of confusing. He had this look about him where you’d think that nothing mattered to him, but he also resembled someone who could play the role of a serial killer.

Joe ended up being my bodybuilding coach and helping men participate in and win several bodybuilding shows. He was a really great coach and I would recommend him to anyone that wants to get into the sport.

During our sessions, Joe always reminded me to use my mind when lifting weights. He told me to engage the muscle by using my mind.

The first few times he yelled this out to me as I was doing whatever exercise at the time I was pretty confused. I assumed it was some type of motivational spill he was using to get me hyped up.

Soon I started to realize that what he was telling me to do was something that I could actually physically do… Connect mind to muscle. When you use your mind to lift weights you are literally telling your muscles to contract rather than just performing the motion. This technique ensures that each two you perform is not wasted and gets you the best results.

The same strategy that Joe was helping me execute in the gym can be equally applied to real life situations and experiences.

What I mean is, most times in life, it takes a certain level of mental strength to overcome some of the most physical obstacles. There is a general rule, Where ever the mind goes, the body follows.

So what that means is in most situations, if you think you will win, you will more than likely win. If you believe you can achieve and keep a strong mind, you will make it through most things in life. Nothing great in life is achieve without a strong mind and a will to never give up.

The same rule applies to the negative side of it. If you think and believe that you are going to lose then you will lose. And I believe that there are no exceptions to this rule.

There are hundreds of books that solidify this point. There are also famous saying like “As ye think, so shall ye be.”

This rule is agreed upon many societies and generations. So, if you want great things to happen, you have to think it first. If you want to keep pushing thorough a project or objective, you have to believe you can first. If you want to reach a fitness goal, you have to see yourself achieving it in your mind first.

It almost sounds too easy of a hack I know… but may successful people would agree with the notion that the body always follows the mind.

Hi, Keith,
I think we are not even aware of how much our body can withstand.

The mind is like a muscle - the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets and the more it can expand.

Thank you for your post.

Cheers,

Keith this ost reminds me of another quote attributed to Henry Ford. "If you think you can or think you cannot, you are right!"

Well done!

As I get older, I agree more and more that it takes persistence and strength to overcome limits of the body. At this age, sometimes no matter what my mind thinks, my body will not, in fact cannot follow. The discipline learned early in life really helps in later life as physical limitations become a reality. Despite my comment, your post is very uplifting and essentially right on.
