I don't see why you would promote other already big known online companies for free and your not getting paid if someone purchases. I would focus on amazon for the time being.
You can but why would you? If you are not an affiliate and someone purchases, you will not receive a commission. Can you just use Amazon? They have everything!
I know I wouldn't get paid "yet" I just want to give my visitors the option to compare stores and deals within my site. I will be affiliated later on once my site has reached the recommended standards for the affiliated programs I'm looking to join.

No money in it for you that way. But you can do whatever you want. Why support them if they won't pay you. Take it one step at a time. One affiliate at at time.
