Are You an Early Bird or a Night Owl?

It seems to me that there are two kinds of people; early birds and night owls.

Early birds leap out of bed at the first sign of sunrise, eager to start their day. The idea of having a 'lie in' never occurs to them. Why waste time sleeping? They have things to do!

Night owls, however, are sluggish in the mornings. If they have to get up early it's like a near-death experience for them. They hit the snooze button on their alarm repeatedly until they have to get up, whether they like it or not. Even two cups of industrial-strength coffee won't stop them from yawning all day long.

But then, as the sun sets on another day, they come alive. Suddenly they have lots of energy and it's like a switch has been flipped in their brain. Around the time that the early birds are getting into bed, the night owls are out partying till they drop. Which they eventually do, around 4 am.

They only go home and go to bed because they know that their alarm will be going off in a couple of hours. But if it's the weekend - no alarm going off (yay!) and the night owls can stay burrowed under the duvet until midday if they want. Heaven!

I've examined my own sleeping habits, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm somewhere between the two; I hate having to get up early in the mornings, and my alarm clock gets called all sorts of names for daring to wake me from my pleasant dreams. Coffee won't wake me up and I'm not brave enough to try a cold shower.

I am more alert in the evenings but by 11 pm at the latest, I'm ready to hit the pillows. Partying is out of the question - you're considered unsociable if you go to a party and curl up in the corner, fast asleep. Only cats or dogs can get away with that sort of behaviour.

So think about it - are you an early bird? A night owl? Or, like me, somewhere in between?

Good Post subject....I am both ,being creative , problem solving and intune to the Universe causes me stay up late to create but also
makes me want to get up early to meditate and have peaceful hours before the noise of morning and the phone gets started.
Sometimes this has to be solved by choosing which one is most important...I must get up early to prepare mentally ..I go to bed at a reasonable time to get 4- 5 hours of sleep...if not I stay up as long as necessary and still get the 4-5 hours of sleep.

I can say I am both! I get up early because my daughter has tennis games, and I need to prepare her a good breakfast every time she has tennis games. So in this way , I am an early bird!

And since I like to do training for the WA when everyone is asleep, I do wake up at 1 or 2 am to do that. In this way, I am a night owl!

I am similar to you - though to be fair. I enjoy mornings more than evenings. But that might just be because I am getting older.

I love early mornings, and really appreciate the time of day, when there are fewer people around and life is less complicated because of it.

Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy a sleep-in and I try to get one every Sunday if I can.

Hi Karen...when I first started reading your post, I immediately wondered if there's a place for people who fall in the middle...and I can see there is! I would say afternoons and early evening are my best times of the day and now I can see it's not that unique.

Good question.

I'm a 'get up by 9 am go to bed by 1 am' person. But then at almost 77 (November), I get to make choices.

Good for you! I’m go to bed by 11 pm, get up by 8.30 am. Works for me!
