An encounter with a blogger

Iv always been ignorant about the word "blog" or blogger. That is before I joined WA. Reason being, where I come from that word creates suspicion among most people, because blogging is mostly associated with a person who will dig some information about you and post it on social media.

A couple of months ago, somebody unfamiliar sent me a friend request on fb, after a few weeks, I reluctantly accepted the request. later on I decided to find out who he was, although his names indicated he was a Kenyan and we were from the same community. When he introduced himself as a blogger, my first reaction was to run for the hills, but I decided to wait and engage him more before I figure out my next step.

What followed later was a combination of fear and mistrust, I never met him personally although I had the chance to do so but I didn't find it necessary. After chatting for a few days, he texted me and asked me to send him $ 50.00 which is a lot of money by our currency rating.. That is KSH 5,250 to be precise.

He texted me from a hospital and told me that one of his kids has been taken ill with pneumonia, and needed to be admitted to that hospital, but he didn't have enough to pay for the admission. I became suspicious and asked him several questions then I asked him to send me a photo of his son in that hospital, since I knew that hospital very well. That didn't happen at all, and for three days he kept asking for that money, which started to annoy me and I told him I didn't owe him any money.

The bottom line is he proved my fears correct about his job description because although he was a blogger he was a con artist as well. I disconnected all communication with him.

That encounter added more fear to me about all the stories I had heard about blogging. I now know different since I joined WA because iv learned what a blogger is and that blogging is a career like any other..

That's crazy Jane!! I'm glad that you used your senses and didn't send him any money.
But I can relate to this sort of thing. I add a lot of people to my social media sites, and the odd time, I get a creepo who tries to get me to meet up with him or who is looking for a free ticket into Canada. I haven't encountered anyone who was asking me for any money. I work in a law firm, so I would just get one of my lawyers to look things over. Not to mention, I don't hand money out to people I don't know like that!!
I'm sorry you had to go through this terrible experience. Not all apples in the bunch are rotten, just a few.

Thankyou Brooklyn... Its very encouraging

We do need to take care with people coming through our social media I have had similar things happen and often they target a specific age group in woman to however you do get woman scamming men to glad you did not give him any funds

Let me know if you need any help ...I am still learning myself, but I am getting there...

I still get lots of similar story spam emails, but never felt for it...Pho ne call from so called I.R.S. saying that they will fill a lawsuit against me for unpaid taxes. I always pay mine on time each year...From 20 phone calls I believe they will find a gullible person who will get scammed at the end..
If you read my profile you will notice I never got scammed..Alyaws do research. ,read reviews, ask questions, don't volunteer extra informations .
And do not have fear..Just faith in yourself and God and you are safe here..WA is a genuine tool of learning from a team of diverse community. ..
To blog is fun and challenging ...Have fun blogging and educate others about the true meaning of it...
God bless you!

Thax lore.. I appreciate that insight. Where I come from we have a lot of different scams but mostly here they text you. They are so rampant but if you ignore them the first text they don't persist. The problem with this blogger was that he kept asking me to send money as if I had debt with him.
Actually bloggers here do really harass prominent people especially Radio and TV broadcasters.
Be blessed too

In my country we could call a person like that a 'blagger' - to blag means to tell lies to someone to get what you want. You were right to be wary :)

Hi Jude...thax for your comment.. I was out of WiFi internet for 6hrs. Hope you're having a good time..

Do you know how many times I've heard a story like that??? Some women have actually sent the money many times over. It's crazy. We have to watch EVERY minute and use our common sense. I'm so glad you didn't fall for that!!! Good for you! ~Debbi

Thax sui.

Thax Debbie... I thought its our country alone with those notorious habits... Am surprised its happening everywhere. I was out of internet and WiFi for more than 6hrs. Thax for your comment

That was a close encounter, sheesh…… So many "pseuds" out there!
These people will try anything to practice their "con artistry"

Am surprised it has happened to other people... I thought its only in our country. Thax for sharing

Nope, this phenomenon happens all over the globe and has been happening ever since the dawn of time!
To me the worst aspect of this kind of con-artist is that the perpetrator appeals to the soft hearted, knowing that they will succeed with at least one in 10 people they approach.
Sadly they have no sense of decency, ethics or even an elementary understanding of moral behaviour!
~Arthur

Sure Arthur. It's unfortunate that alot of people fall in that trap and lose their fortunes while this hooligans walks around free.
By the way my dad's name was Arthur. I got excited when I saw that name here.

Cheers.

It's a good and noble name…… Thanks! :))

Sorry for that, that is how idlers and con artist work nowadays, it lucky for for you, you were too smart for the game. Social media is a mixture of different personalities.

Thax chero for your response.. I went to a function away from home hence I was offline for quite a while. I saw your comment but couldn't connect due to WiFi. Asante Sana. Imagine when I wrote that article I didn't know how to post it... I even asked a question on live chat what how I should post it..but didn't get help so I did what I thought was right. Then I left home..not knowing whether it'll post or not. Its your comment I saw first and realised it worked. But I was offline.
Barikiwa Sana .

There are way too many people out there trying to scam! It's a shame. Glad you didn't let that completely scare you from learning that blogging is actually pretty great! :)

Hello Angel... Nice to meet you.. thankyou for your comment. Indeed he didn't. If I didn't join WA I still would not have known what blogging is and bloggers are not crooks.
Best wishes

I'm sorry that you had to experience that. A lot of times people who mean to do bad things can take on many forms or guises, but you should not generalize and instead just be careful. It's a good thing you are smart and didn't send him the money. I hope this doesn't happen again.

Thankyou caisaki.. I appreciate your comment.. Iv been away offline for 7 hrs. I thought it only happen in our country but now I understand.
