AI in Spreadsheets - GPTExcel

Hi, I wanted to share an intriguing piece of information I recently came across regarding the application of AI in spreadsheets.

It seems the days of spending countless hours trying to figure out complex formulas could soon be a thing of the past!

Two of the biggest tech companies, Microsoft and Google, are making strides in this area. Microsoft is testing an AI-integration assistant, Copilot, across its Microsoft 365 applications, while Google is also developing AI tools for its spreadsheet software, Google Sheets. The aim of these features is to aid in performing spreadsheet tasks more efficiently and even suggesting appropriate formulas.

While these in-house developments are in progress, there are third-party tools currently available, such as GPTExcel. This tool enables users to input a function, and it will then generate the corresponding formula for Excel or Google Sheets.

What I find particularly useful is its 'explain' feature that provides a step-by-step walk-through of the generated formula, enhancing our understanding of its operation.

Warning - if you use GPTExcel (.uk) It works fine but it also opens another tab on your browser, advertising an Adblocker . Just leave this tab open while you use GPTExcel, and click back on the ExcelGPT tab.

Obviously, as exciting as these advancements are, it's important to approach AI-generated formulas with a degree of caution. It's crucial to double-check these formulas to prevent any potential issues related to data accuracy and integrity. At one point ChatGPT tried to tell me two times 20 was 50!

I think the incorporation of AI into spreadsheets is an interesting step towards enhancing efficiency, as it automates repetitive tasks and reduces the necessity for manual work. This will hopefully allow us to focus more on the strategic aspects of our work.

Overall, I think the emergence of AI in the realm of spreadsheets presents a compelling look into the future, where AI could assist us with much of our digital work, making our tasks much more manageable.

Will you try GPTExcel?

Let me know in the comments.

All the best,

Julia
