What are YOUR idioms?
It dawned on me recently that as a English speaker my day to day conversation is loaded with idioms. It's the absolute norm for me and I don't even realise I am doing it. I'm not sure it comes across in my writing, perhaps the odd time but I think it's predominatly a verbal expression.
That got me thinking do they occur as frequent in every other language? Or are they lost in translation? I know in the gaelige language there are many idioms as we are taught when I was in school. And an absolute favourit of mine is the following but I'm not sure if it's because it was an easy one to remember ;-)‘Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin’ Meaning: There’s no hearth like your own hearth - there is no home like your own home!
In the English language alone, it is estimated that there are at least twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions - that sure is a lot!
Below is a flavour of the types of ones that I notice that I use, possible more so when I am at work: -
Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole - trying to do something but you don't know how to
it's apples to oranges - cannot compare products - two different
something that doesnt work, it's dead as a doornail - not functioning properly
keep your hair on - remain calm and don't get annoyed
making a mountain out of a molehill - elaborating something in a very dramatic way
Never look a gift horse in the mouth - to accept a gift as it is given instead of trying to get something better.
out of the frying pan and into the fire - going from bad to worse
Six of one, half a dozen of the other - comparison between the two things which are identical
variety is the spice of life - new and exciting practices make life more attractive
to get the wrong end of the stick - to not understand the situation in the right manner
When someone is being a hypocrite - pot calling the kettle black
In the nick of time - doing something at the last possible second
jump in at the deep end - start a new job or activity without being prepared for it
you can't teach an old dog new tricks - you cannot make others change their habits
"An idiom is a phrase, saying or a group of words that has a metaphorical (not literal) meaning, which has become accepted in common usage" (Theidioms.com)
I'd love to hear what your favourite idiom is, or what you reguarly use in your every day vocabulary - Happy FriYaY folks

Really great post!
I use it mostly in speaking but rarely in writing. Keep doing such cool posts.
