There are narcissistic bosses and narcissistic co-workers. They have enablers in the company who support them, but people don't know they're being manipulated because these narcissistic bosses are good at hiding it.

Narcissistic bosses cause a lot of pain to other people, gaslighting you into thinking that your opinion is wrong or that you're not smart enough to understand what's going on.

The narcissist has no empathy for others. An empath does have compassion for others because they can put themselves in other people's shoes and imagine how someone else feels without having any personal involvement with this person whatsoever.

Narcissism can be traced back through history, where it was common among kings and queens who would manipulate their subjects without feeling.

What do narcissistic bosses do?

They often have a high staff turnover rate because people can't stand to work with them for very long. They are also more susceptible to confronting lawsuits from their workers due to the hostile and toxic work environments they foster.

The good news is that narcissistic bosses can be dealt with through therapy, but it's essential to realize that you will not change this person. You need to get away from them and find a healthy work environment that appreciates your contributions.

It's never too late to leave a job that's making you miserable, so don't hesitate to take action if you feel your workplace is becoming increasingly toxic. There are plenty of other opportunities out there, so don't let yourself be taken advantage of by a narcissistic boss.

Signs of narcissistic behaviours:

The narcissistic boss can have a devastating effect on the workplace. A pervasive pattern of grandiosity characterizes narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), need for admiration, and lack of empathy.

Individuals with NPD often have an inflated sense of their importance and are preoccupied with fantasies about unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.

Narcissists are often charming and charismatic at first, but their true colours eventually show. They can be hostile and aggressive, and they often make life miserable for the people who work for them.

The narcissistic boss creates a toxic work environment characterized by mistrust, fear, and hostility.

The narcissistic boss and his enablers

The narcissist will employ a multitude of Enablers and create a smear campaign. There are narcissistic enablers who help facilitate selfish behaviour by encouraging, supporting and rewarding it.

They may be oblivious about what they're doing, or they know full well that this is wrong but do it anyway because of personal gain.

These people often have ulterior motives for wanting you gone so that their narcissistic boss can have the power and control all to themselves.

They will often make up lies about you or spread rumours to discredit you.

Narcissism in history

King Louis XIV of France is often cited as an example of narcissistic personality disorder. He would break down into fits of rage if he felt that his needs were not being met and was known to be highly demanding with those around him, even referring to himself as the Sun King because everything revolved around him.

He had extensive plans for his future reign, taking the time to write them down in detail.

He was the narcissistic boss who would not give an inch, but he did accomplish a lot during his lifetime, and France flourished under him.

He became one of history's most significant narcissistic enablers by rewarding those around him for their support while allowing them to believe that they were making important decisions.

How to identify a narcissistic boss and how to deal with them

The narcissistic boss can be challenging and often displays many manipulative behaviours.

If you suspect that you're working for a narcissistic boss, here are some tips for how to deal with them:

  • Document everything: Keep a journal of all the selfish things your boss does and says. This can be helpful if you need to take legal action later on.
  • Set boundaries: Don't let the narcissistic boss bully or manipulate you. Establish clear limits and speak up for yourself.
  • Keep your distance: Try to limit the amount of time you spend around the narcissistic boss. When possible, avoid them altogether.
  • Get support: Talk to someone about what's going on at work. A friend, family member, or therapist can offer emotional support and guidance.

It can be challenging to maintain our empathy, especially when we are constantly exposed to narcissistic and toxic behaviour, but we must try.

Tips for more Empathic in Business

Consider working in an atmosphere where you are not afraid, where you are safe, where you can assist others, communicate your thoughts, and even discover answers to errors without feeling ashamed. So, why is empathy important?

One reason is the capacity to put yourself in the shoes of your customers and co-workers, which leads to mutual understanding and confidence. Narcissists are still human beings who need money to exist and raise their families; automation is taking charge, even this computer I'm typing on, and people are living in distress.

Here are some suggestions for improving your workplace more compassionate and fruitful:

  • Empathy begins with listening. Active listening entails devoting significant focus to the speaker, making eye contact, and reflecting on what you heard.
  • Be patient and take your time when answering. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand.
  • Refrain from uttering criticizing remarks like "you should have."," "I would have," or "you're wrong."
  • Show interest in the speaker and their feelings.
  • Make sure you aren't distracted when the other person is talking.
  • Turn off your phone, computer, and TV.
  • Express empathy in your words, facial expressions, and body language.
  • When possible, put yourself in the other person's shoes, and imagine how you would feel if you were in their situation.
  • Request clarity on what the individual is saying to ensure that you understand them correctly.
  • If it's appropriate during your conversation, ask about both yourself and the other person—for example: "How are you feeling?" How has life and stuff been working for you lately?"
  • Validate the speaker's feelings, even if you disagree with them.
