Fear of failure or fear of success?

Are there both kinds of fear?

  • Absolutely! Let's examine them:
  • Some people are afraid to try because they are afraid they'll fail.
  • Others are afraid they'll be successful and people will expect more from them!
  • Are fears real? debilitating in some cases... do you have to live with them?
  • NO! Ever watch a baby trying to walk? They fall and immediately get up.
Everyone falls down... EVERYONE!
  • Everyone suffers moments of fear.
  • For pilots it has been said:
  • Flying is hours of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer panic!
  • Lot's of truths there. Been many times I didn't want to push those throttles forward!
  • You suck it up, smile in front of everyone, and say everything is fine!
  • Many struggle to write the first blog... that's normal... just do it!

Let me run this quote by you from Robert F. Kennedy:

"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."...

Pull up your bootstraps and wade in... you won't know if you can until you try!

Wow. I'll say Joe I used to have such a problem with failure in my early 20s. It stemmed from being an over achiever and coming from a prominent family.

It seems like everyone's eyes were always on you. As you can imagine I had a lot to work through.

My Aunt who I lived with always seemed to understand. She GAVE me PERMISSION to fail.

She would say things like, "girl no one is perfect or don't worry about them, those same people looking on has can't even manage their own lives. You can only do your best."

Today these are messages I convey to my own children and we celebrate every achievement.

We can only do our best job. Once you have done that fail with pride.

Yes Joe. Unconsciously, we may all have both of these fears in different aspects of life. Thanks for the great post.

Oh yes, Joe, you struck a hard truth, and one almost everybody denies. It sounds silly but it's out there--fear of succeeding." What do I do bout gov't regulations, taxes. I'm not a bookkeeper," etc.,etc. "Keep on writing , may have to hire help, on and on."
All wonderful problems to have, but can be pretty scary at the beginning. Becoming a business person is pretty scary to begin with- but the risks and hurdles are worth every flutter in the stomach. We will never know what we can do until we try.

Great reply Barbara.
Thanks.
