There is one way though, buying a new domain and moving your website from one domain to the next. I did that with my astronomy website. I first bought my domain then moved my website from siterubix to my domain. However, I chose to change the name. So I bought a new domain and moved my website from my first paid domain to my new payed domain.
As long as you're clear on your niche, yes you should get you own dot com domain name related to your niche. As a Premium member, you should have 30 credits that you can use to pay for your domain name at checkout.
I don't think it's required to buy your own domain before you can progress. Even if you skip the lessons involving your own domain you can always go back to old lessons in the future to complete them. Then when you are ready you can buy your domain. However, "com" domains are only about $14.99 per year and not expensive if you are worried about price.
