Is creating backlinks the same as just putting links in to other websites that you are referencing against? If not, how do I create backlinks?
Backlinks are links pointing to your site from other sources. However, backlinks doesn't add to ranking of your posts. They may bring traffic, but in term of SEO, they are close to meaningless.
You don't want to focus on building backlinks because Google can penalize you by doing that. This tactic is considered as black hat seo.
Dalibor.
Thank you for your advice. I was mainly thinking of backlinks more as a reference to some of the websites I have researched rather than to boost rankings.
Yes, but backlinks can be referring to other websites or to your own website, but other posts.
As an example, if you write an article it is good to add links which referring to your other posts too, but of course, it has to be related to your post. Don't put just random and nor related links to your posts.

Marius
Those are internal links when you link from post to post in your website
I would stay away from backlinks and just focus on internal and external linking
I know but it still classed as backlinking, there are many types of backlings and internal links are one of them :) And I personally would recommend using internal links in the first place.
