This is not directly related to my WA sites specifically, but rather the tricks, tactics, and suggestions that were made to me by my wonderful peers and mentors here at WA.

I have, for the longest time, been a huge pessimist about the potential of making money online. This is mostly due to the numerous poor experiences, setbacks, downfalls, and pitfalls I've come to experience over the last 15 years of trying.

I had set up an account at Fiverr, a freelancer site, about two to three weeks ago, as was suggested to me by a few members. At first, nothing was coming in - as was to be expected. About a week ago, however, I noticed the stats were starting to go up in the views and impressions, and finally I was contacted by someone for one of my translation gigs (Japanese to English).

I was ecstatic to say the least... especially since the job they needed to be done had a price tag of over $1,500! The only caveat was that this amount of work (120 pages of FINANCIAL documents, plus re-creating the formatting...) would normally take about 4-5 days to realistically complete, but they wanted it done in 24 hours. Needless to say, I told them it would be impossible and that at best, I could complete roughly 1/3 of the work for them for $600 (included a rush-delivery and legal jargon fee).

Unfortunately that job, as expected, ended up getting scrapped by the guy's upper management. Poor sap must have waited too long, or had thought that a single freelancer could equate to the same amount of work as a full corporate team. Don't know...

Either way, my pessimism had shot through the roof at that point, and I was on the verge of just closing up shop... that was until about 3 days ago when he contacted me again with a new job. This time for proof-reading a google-translated document.

To cut an already long story - I sent him a very generous offer, which he kindly accepted. In hindsight, I should have taken into consideration the scope of the work in more detail, and probably could have justified charging more than double... but oh well. Let's just call it a "first customer discount".

24 hours ago, my challenge was:

Proofreading 18 pages of mostly technical IT jargon, A technical design document translated from Japanese into the form of Japanglish... i.e. GOOGLENESE.

Now, you may think that proofreading 18 pages does not seem like such a bad thing, especially since the entire English side of the document was only a little over 4,500 words - but throw in grammatical chaos, IT Jargon, and a few untranslatable Japanese metaphors... you've got yourself one hell of a migraine waiting for you.

Needless to say, the entire document took me over 6 hours of hard, brain-wracking work... but it was so worth it in the end, because this was the first time in my life that I have earned a profit online (I'm not counting "Sell-it-yourself" sites like Amazon, EBay, etc)

This feeling of success is like no other. I put in nearly the same amount of work as my day-job, if not more... yet the outcome was much more satisfying because I know that I am doing this for myself and my family, and not to line the pockets and stoke the ego of the company president.

Hopefully this is a turning point for me, and not just a one-hit wonder. I want to eventually transform this into a livable situation (making a living from doing this) so that I can work from home while providing for my family. I really enjoy my wife's cooking, and would love to be able to eat it every day for lunch, and not just dinner! (Yes, I do cook on the weekends, if you must know).

Jason, signing off for now (it's well past midnight now, so off to bed for me)

Congratulations on a job well done.
Jerry

"and not to line the pockets and stoke the ego of the company president".
Love this part. Thanks for the post.

I'm glad you got a laugh out of it.

Honestly, our president pays us peanuts... but then buys new cars every year and other useless stuff from China that ends up just piling up in some corner of the company. He's a hoarder that's using his company as a storage facility. hah.

I'm just glad our customers don't see/notice it (often).

Well done Jason. Believe us, after 10 years online, every sale still gives you a buzz - it's awesome.

Out of interest, have you tried https://www.upwork.com/ or https://www.freelancer.co.uk/ or https://www.helpareporter.com/

They may be of use to you.

Wish you every success

Jon and Debbie

Thanks!

Yes, i'm also signed up for both UpWork and Freelancer.com, though those seem to require me to use some kind of token system to find gigs... I only get a limited amount per month, I honestly feel like it's more gambling than actual negotiation... because if someone doesn't reply (for example, their account is a bot), I've now wasted two valuable tokens on them :-(

Gotta pay for more tokens once you use up your supply. didn't really like or care for that kind of monopoly system.

I'll take a look at Helpareporter.com though, I haven't heard of that one before, so could be interesting!

Thanks again!

Congratulations Jason!
I'm sure you'll be in demand for more work - this is such a neat niche to be in.

Wishing you many more Fiverr successes!

Thanks.

My current goal is simple supplemental income to recover what I lost due to my salary cut last month, which hurts. Eventually I want to go full time with freelancing and my WA site - assuming I can do enough to earn a living on it. My only worry is the stability of it.

Ouch. That must've hurt especially with the cost of living going up. I've not had a salary cut, but I haven't had an increase for years!

I too am looking to go full time with this business - for me, it's all about spending time with my family and doing the things I love to do without having to be given the permission to do so.

I've heard it time and time again here... if you can make 1 sale you can make 100! So, no need to worry about the stability of your online business - just keep working at it.

Wishing you all the best!

Yay and congrats - be a pessimist if you want but I have made over $7000 on Fiverr to date :) So that $136 may be your first of many and I hope it is.

The things you will learn here will help you to make money online and the members here are always positive and helpful.

Congrats and know that there is more to come!

oh nice!

the most surprising part for me was that the $136 was within a 24 hour period. Rush delivery job - well worth it in the end though :-)

Thanks for your comment!

The point is you made money online, your first taste and that feels great. My first sale was about $0.40 so consider yourself lucky LOL

I had made 3-4$ with Google ads in the past, but was never able to hit the withdraw threshold. I was so bummed and felt like $100 was such a long way to go. Even after a year it never reached more than 7$ so I had given up on the past.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to where this is going!

It took me 18 months to get my first payment from Google Adsense! But now I make the threshold every single month and I have been for the last year+.

Don't give up on it yet.
