Hello WA Family,

The pros and cons of affiliate networks are our topic today, I want you to understand both of these before you sign up with any of them. As always, everyone is more than welcome to comment and share to help each other.

Affiliate Networks

Affiliate networks act as middlemen in the affiliate marketing world, connecting publishers like you, the wealthy affiliate with advertisers looking to promote their products or services.

Imagine a marketplace where advertisers and publishers browse for the perfect fit for their target audience. Networks handle the introductions, streamlining the process and offering valuable tools for both sides.

By understanding the advantages and limitations of affiliate networks, you can make informed decisions to optimize your income streams. There is no right or wrong when deciding on affiliate networks. It all depends on what is right for you.

Affiliate Network Pros

  • This opens doors to a wider range of high-commission programs that perfectly align with your niche and audience.
  • Networks provide tracking and reporting, giving you real-time insights into your campaign performance.
  • Networks can potentially automate tasks like affiliate recruitment and payout management.

We next are going to learn about credibility and trust from affiliate networks, so keep reading to learn more about these opportunities.

Credibility and Trust

  • Networks often vet advertisers, offering a layer of security for affiliates.
  • Leverage the network's reputation to build trust with potential customers.
  • Networks can provide marketing materials and resources to support promotions.

By joining well-known and established affiliate networks you can have faith in their credibility and trust. Let us learn about tracking as a member of one of these networks.

Advanced Tracking

  • Access to detailed performance data for campaign optimization.
  • Networks may offer tools for competitor analysis and market research.
  • Data-driven insights to maximize return on investment (ROI).

Next on my agenda is payment security. Another benefit when you are a member of an affiliate network.

Payment Security

  • Receive payouts from multiple advertisers through a single source.
  • Networks often handle payment processing and ensure timely payouts.
  • Reduced risk of fraud or non-payment from individual advertisers.

These are the major pros of being a part of an affiliate network, so now we are going to learn about the cons next.

Affiliate Networks Cons

Network Fees and Commissions

  • Costs associated with joining and participating in a network.
  • Commissions taken by the network can reduce affiliate earnings.
  • Wealthy affiliates may find fees less attractive compared to direct deals.

Fees and commissions are something that you want to consider before taking the first step. Often you can receive a higher commission by joining affiliate programs directly.

Less Control and Flexibility

  • Network policies and terms may restrict some marketing strategies.
  • Limited ability to negotiate commission rates directly with advertisers.
  • Less control over branding and messaging in promotional campaigns.

Many times you are not able to work directly with the programs that you join, This is something to think about before joining networks.

Potential for Competition

  • Networks may connect multiple affiliates to the same program, increasing competition.
  • Wealthy affiliates with established audiences may prefer more exclusive arrangements.
  • Network saturation can lead to lower conversion rates for some products.

You might experience a high volume of competition through affiliate networks. Why people join them is for convenience. Saving time is not always our best decision all the time, so this is something we want to think over before making our final decision.

Considerations for Wealthy Affiliates

  • Evaluate network fees against potential based on your traffic and conversion rates.
  • Focus on networks with a strong reputation and programs relevant to your audience.
  • Leverage network resources while maintaining creative control over your promotions.
  • Consider combining network participation with direct advertiser deals.
  • Diversify your income streams beyond affiliate marketing to build long-term wealth.

Above I have provided you with some considerations before making any decisions. A little more to share with you before we part ways.

Affiliate Networks Considerations

Safety concerns depend on your risk tolerance and priorities. However, wealthy affiliates can prioritize certain aspects when choosing a network to minimize risks

  • Look for established networks with a history of fair business practices and secure payment processing.
  • Check online reviews and industry resources for insights.
  • Networks should provide clear terms of service, program details, and commission structures.
  • They should offer responsive customer support to address any issues promptly.
  • Prioritize networks with a proven record of on-time payouts and secure payment methods.
  • Investigate minimum payout thresholds and any associated fees.

Here are some affiliate networks that wealthy affiliates might consider, but further research is recommended before you sign up.

ShareASale

  • Renowned for its vast network of advertisers and user-friendly interface. Offers a variety of payment options and a strong reputation for security.

ClickBank

  • Popular for digital products, with a focus on recurring commissions. Be mindful of potential product quality variations within the network.

CJ Affiliate

  • A large and established network with a focus on high-quality advertisers. May have stricter application requirements for publishers.

Impact Radius

  • Offers a performance-based marketing platform with advanced tracking and reporting features.
  • May be more suitable for affiliates comfortable with complex data analysis.

Remember, wealthy affiliates may also consider both affiliate networks and direct deals with advertisers. Direct deals can offer more control and potentially higher commissions. You will have to do the legwork to find them on your own, but often these are well worth your time to be unique in your niche and stand out from the crowd.

I hope this clears the water about Affiliate Networks,

Jeff

Nice write-up, Jeff, just need to clear up a couple of points, since I work for an affiliate network.

Let's go through a couple of the "Cons".

1. There aren't costs associated with joining an affiliate network. Yeah, Awin does charge $1 up front, but it's immediately given back to you in your account! I explained the whole thing in this post - 2. Commissions aren't taken away from the publisher. The advertiser pays those commission fees on top of the commission to the network. The affiliate is not charged one cent for this!

3. One of our requirements to work with an advertiser that also has an in-house program is that the commissions for the network must match those of the in-house program. We agree, anything less isn't fair to the affiliate.

Only slimy advertisers or networks would pay two different amounts, so if you are getting more from an advertiser by going direct, decide if that's the quality of company you really want to work with.

Some other points to ponder:

If you are a well-performing affiliate, it is just as easy to work out a special deal with a merchant through a network as it is directly. Networks often have more advanced ways to track different types of deals too.

The whole competition concern is not accurate - you're going to experience that competition whether it's an in-house program or on a platform, if the product is any good. You'll only have less competition if it isn't well-known, in which case the big guys will often ignore it.

Remember too that technology development is VERY expensive. A network can amortize that cost over all of their merchants; an in-house program has to absorb it all internally. The in-house programs simply can't afford to keep up with technology, with just a handful of exceptions like Amazon and eBay. Now, with the end of 1st party cookies, if you are working with someone in-house, make sure they can handle S2S tracking or you will lose commissions.

I also like to remind folks that by working with networks, you can log into one location and see your results for multiple programs. It makes it so much easier to track! All the commissions are combined into one check, so it's much easier to hit the payment threshold than it can be with individual programs. Finally, it's also one check for all the programs, instead of keeping track of all the individual checks each month.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. I've been with Awin US for 13 years now, so I know a lot about networks!

Thank you for sharing what you have learned from working with Awin. We all appreciate you helping us with networks

Curious 🤨

Are there some networks that rank the products on quality. I’ve noticed that often times there are a plethora of products, and a lot of them are really bad.

People create “products“ and just get it up there to see if they can find some affiliates to sell it.

Great questions The Magic Brad,

Unfortunately, affiliate networks themselves typically don't rank their affiliate programs on "quality"

Consumerreports.org is a popular non-profit organization that conducts independent testing and reviews.

I hope these resources are helpful, Brad
