# ? Silence as a Signal: Testing Substack’s Note Engagement
Most people chase likes.
I’m chasing something else—**truthful engagement**.
A few days ago, I dropped a Note on Substack asking readers to reply.
**Nobody did.**
So I restacked it. Commented. Still quiet.
This isn’t a complaint.
It’s a **test**.
---
### 🔍 If you’re on Substack
👉 Check out the Note here: *[Insert your Substack Note link*
Then come back and tell me what you thought… or didn’t.
### 🤔 If you’re not on Substack
I want to hear from you, too:
**What stops people from replying to things like this?**
Is it the platform? The tone? The message? Or something else entirely?
---
### 📊 Why This Matters
I'm not trying to go viral.
I'm trying to **build a connection**.
And right now, silence is the loudest thing I hear.
I’m not mad.
I’m **fascinated**.
And I’ll keep testing until I hear the **chirping** turn into a **chorus**.

Jay, based on my experience with Instagram, I can tell you that building a community who truly engages with you requires something very different.
People is overwhelmed with posts so they don't truly care about what we ask them to do!
What they care is knowing you better - and the only way is showing yourself, talking on camera and interacting personally with them.
This is a new generation of social users who wants to interact personally with the brand.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information!
Really appreciate you taking the time — it’s a big help!

Good morning JD,
I've never used substack, but I know of lots of people who do, so I have often wondered what the results are really like. Personally, I always think we're better off with are own website, but there must be reasons why people use substack.
On another note, you really ought to clean your AI article up, it would make it much easier for people to read, rather than copying it straight into a blog post.
Have a great day.
Roy
Thanks, Roy.
I prefer WA over Substack, also. However, I'm unable to publish my stories here, which is where Substack comes in, because they are not ready to be published as a book.
You are not the only one to suggest that I have let AI do most of the work, or that I need to put more input into it, or, as you say, clean it up.
I am not going to give you an excuse, but I will give you my reason. A few weeks ago, we had to put my mother in the hospital due to a bad UTI. She is doing better and in a Nursing/Care/Rest Home Facility to build up her strength. So, among the normal things that everyone has to do at home, My Dad and I are going to visit Mom for several hours of the day every other day.
So, I guess I have gotten sloppy. I will work at getting back to where I was.

Good morning JD,
Do you mean you prefer to publish on the Wealthy Affiliate or your own personal blog, JD? Presumably you could publish to your own blog, JD? My apologies for all the questions, but I am genuinely interested in how different members do things!
It just makes it easier to read, when everything is altogether and without all the abbreviations, etc.
I'm sorry to hear about your mother, but I'm glad that she is doing better and building up a strength, that's good news. It's good to look after our parents. I hope your mother continues to make good progress.
Have a fantastic day and all the best.
Roy
Hi, Roy.
To try to answer your questions. Substack has potential, but it's not entirely clear. There are at least 3 "Homes", your blogs, articles, chapters, whatever, only go out to the people that subscribe to your Substack. Any Notes you post can be totally missed, like they were swept away by the rapids, unless they see action right away.
A few people have reached out, but that is at least partially due to them looking for another paying customer, and I don't have the money to spare.
If I could afford "legal" copyright protection for my stories, I would be publishing on my site till I could publish them in book form.
I hope this answers your questions, Roy.
JD
Hello JD,
I appreciate you answering my questions.
I've always been curious of how people use platforms like Substack and Medium, etc. I see quite a few people using substack for news type items, I'm not sure if this is what it was designed for, or maybe it's designed for any niche.
It's interesting that people have reached out to you, but maybe not for the reasons you really wanted!
It certainly answers my questions, JD, thank you.
Have a great day.
Roy
You're welcome, Roy.
