What Is MY Niche?

As a newcomer, choosing a niche can be difficult...

Believe me, I've been there.

I even insisted on creating the next Gamestop when building my first website.

The niche, video games.

What I didn't realize at the time is that video games is an entire industry which is made up of several smaller niches.

Choosing an industry as your starting point is like trying to boil the entire ocean when it's not necessary.

You can target a specific group of people, say people with hyperhidrosis (random example), and create lots of success as a result of doing so.

The purpose of this training is to help you choose a suitable niche for you and one that's narrowed down and not an entire industry.

Most importantly, a niche that's profitable.

What Is A Niche?

A niche can be defined as a segment of a market.

Or as Kyle likes to put it in his niche training, a group of people looking for something.

One of the first steps as an online business owner is to find a topic, or niche, for that business.

Who is your target audience?

Who are you trying to help?

Choosing A Profitable Niche

Choosing a niche could be as simple as going with a passion of yours, something you have knowledge in, or even a hobby.

The difference between choosing a profitable niche and a niche that fails?

You will experience the most success by choosing a niche where you can offer the most value.

Also, profitable niches deal with a buying audience.

A profitable niche deals with a buying audience and is a niche that you can offer the most value in.

Some people know right away who their ideal audience is. They have a clear passion and know what they would like to create a website about. (Or who they're creating a website for).

Others, like myself, have no clue what their one passion might be. Let alone what to create an entire website about.

If unsure about which direction to take, ask yourself the following question:

Where or who can I offer the most value to?

The answer to this will likely be different for everyone as choosing a niche is a very personal process.

To help with this process, try the following practice.

With a pen and paper, write down anything that comes to mind for:

  • Previous jobs you've held in the past (including odd or under the table jobs)
  • Expertise (including any certifications you have)
  • Education (including certain subjects you enjoy)
  • Problems you've faced (example: acne, health, quitting smoking, depression, parenting, money, etc. Write anything down that comes to mind)
  • Also write down any subscriptions or classes you pay for (ex. apps, books, online subscriptions/courses, etc)
  • Leisure activities (ex. fishing, mountain biking, taking photos, drawing, etc)

The goal here is to get ideas flowing and to get a sense of where you can offer the most value.

From here, we will likely need to narrow down a bit.

How Do I Know If My Niche Is Any Good?

There are no guarantees that the first website you create or that the first niche you choose to work in will be a success.

But if you work your way through these steps, you will be much closer to choosing a more polished niche, even if you don't get it right the first time.

Before moving on I want to give you a couple of quick examples of niches I've worked in.

Some of these were too broad and complete disasters from the start.

Some were better as they were more narrow and target a specific group of people.

Let's see if you can guess which ones were good v bad. First up:

  1. Video Games - Too Broad
This was my first choice as a beginner. As a casual gamer and knowing that the industry is booming, it seemed to make sense. Video games itself is far too broad and did not make for a good niche.

Here's a list of possible niches in the video game space: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/nathaniell/blog/video-game-niche-breakdown

  2. Wireless TV Speakers - Narrow
This one was a better selection as it caters to a specific group of people (or type of items that people look for).

  3. Fire Pit Rings - Narrow
Like Wireless TV Speakers, this makes for a decent niche. While it focuses on a certain kind of item there's also many things that I can talk about while creating a website for fire pit rings (or any niche really).

Like how to install them. Should you use gas or propane? Does metal make for the best fire pit ring? And so on.
  4. CBD Vapes - Narrow
This is one of the most recent niche website that I've put together. You can check it out here: https://cbdvapetalk.com/

Again, it provides information regarding a specific product. The best ones available and gives general information on their safety, etc.

  5. Make Money Online - Too Broad
This isn't a niche I would recommend for beginners, unless you have experience in making money online.

    It's far too broad.

But if you are absolutely interested in teaching others how they can earn online or start an online business, Wealthy Affiliate is a great platform to promote which offers a great payout to its affiliates.

Instead of choosing "make money online" as your niche (like I've mistakenly done in the past) get more specific.

Who do you want to help? Retirees? Single moms? Or do you want to teach people about building websites? Affiliate marketing? SEO? (Don't worry, these are things you WILL know like the back of your hand by following the training here at WA).

Buying Audiences

Your niche does not have to be about a certain item or product, like some of the ones shared above.

It can be about problems you've faced or still face, addresses a pain point, be a passion, or even a hobby.

But one critical thing you need to ask yourself:

Are the people visiting my website likely to make a purchase?

People are likely to make purchases when you answer questions they have or by addressing a pain point of there's.

For example, if I run a website which provides the lyrics to songs, are people likely to buy anything?

Or browse the lyrics and leave?

They'll read the lyrics and leave. Same is true for website with motivational quotes, etc.

Now, if I run a website about hyperhidrosis (people who sweat excessively) and can address some of their pain points like the embarassment of constantly appearing sweaty, always having to keep an extra shirt, and provide a solution to this problem, do you think they are likely to buy?

100% more likely.

By providing a solution to peoples problems and/or answering questions, you are more likely dealing with a buying audience.

More Niche Help

Still struggling to come up with a niche?

Don't worry, it's common. Some people know right away while others need more time before choosing.

Give yourself a day or two maximum, then choose something, and move on with the training. It doesn't have to be "perfect" as you are unlikely to get everything right the first time around.

If you're stuck, I reocmmend seeing Jay's awesome webinar on Researching Audiences/Niches. You will have a niche picked out by the end of it.

I also created a post addressing a common question that I come across. What Is The Most Profitable Niche?

In it, I share the 3 most popular, evergreen markets which each have tons of potential.

Conclusion

There's an unlimited amount of profitable niches to choose from.

Wealthy Affiliate will teach you how to turn that niche into a long term, profitable online business.

(By now, you should have created a free Starter account within WA).

The training here is very hands-on, up to date, and the help and level of experience offered by other members is very valuable to anyone just getting started.

By following the advice and tasks shared above, you will be far more educated when it comes to choosing a niche than your average person just getting started.

Choosing a niche where you can offer the most value is ideal.

Chossing a niche that is more of a hobby of yours may work just as well too.

Don't worry about picking the perfect niche. Give yourself a few days if needed, choose one following the advice given above and move on.
