You Can Do Keyword Research with CHATGPT
Did you know that keyword research can be done through CHATGPT? But the question is can we trust the keyword research as it advising us too without needing to pay for extra services like Moz or any other keyword research tool?
I asked CHATGPT these questions and returned a reusable 7-step workflow saying it can be used in any niche.
1st step: Clarify your goal and audience: Tell ChatGPT your niche, products, ideal reader, and business goal (affiliate clicks, email sign-ups, etc.). This keeps suggestions on-brand and monetization-ready.
2nd Step: Seed keywords-smart expansion: Give 5–10 seed terms, Ask for: head terms, long-tails, modifiers (best/cheap/brand/for {use case}), and comparison “vs” ideas.
3rd Step: Classify Intent: Have ChatGPT label each idea as Informational / Commercial / Transactional / Navigational, plus funnel stage (TOFU/MOFU/BOFU). This guides content type (guide, roundup, review, VS, how-to).
4th Step: Cluster in topical silos: Ask it to group keywords into 5–10 clusters with a pillar page and 4–8 supporting posts each, including suggested internal links.
5th Step: Serp Check: Open Google for a target keyword, copy the top 10-page titles/URLs (just the titles + brief notes), paste into ChatGPT and ask for: search intent, feature types (snippets/FAQs/videos), content gaps, angle to win.
6th Step: Prioritize: Request a shortlist ranked by Business Fit, Likely Difficulty (heuristic from SERP), and Traffic Potential (qualitative). Keep a column for real metrics you’ll fill later (from GSC or any tool).
7th Step: Create Briefs: Generate a one-page brief per keyword: purpose, angle, audience, title ideas, H2/H3s, FAQs (for snippet wins), internal links, schema suggestion, meta title/description, URL slug.
CHATGPT also provided copy and paste prompts to use:
A) Expansion from seeds:
“Act as an SEO strategist. Using these seeds: [LIST], generate 120 keyword ideas split into: Head, Long-tail, “Best/Top” roundups, “VS” comparisons, “For {use case}”. Return a table with: Keyword | Intent | Funnel Stage | Suggested Post Type | Notes (affiliate potential). Avoid duplicates.”
B) Cluster & silo map:
“Cluster these keywords into 8–10 topical silos. For each cluster, give: Pillar URL slug, 5–8 supporting posts, and recommended internal links (parent → child and sibling ↔ sibling). Output as a neat table.”
C) SERP intent & gap analysis (after you paste top 10 titles):
“From these top results, identify the dominant intent, SERP features, content patterns, and gaps. Recommend a winning angle, outline (H2/H3), and on-page elements to capture the snippet/PAAs.”
D) Prioritization:
“Rank this list by Business Fit (1–5), Likely Difficulty (1–5) based on SERP competition, and Traffic Potential (1–5) based on breadth of modifiers and intent. Add a Priority score = Fit + Potential – Difficulty.”
E) Content brief generator:
“For the keyword: [KEYWORD], create a concise brief with audience, promise, 3 title options (≤60 chars), URL slug, meta description (≤155), H2/H3s, bullet talking points, 8 PAAs/FAQs, internal links to [YOUR POSTS], and recommended schema.”
F) Internal link planner (great for existing sites):
“Using my existing posts [PASTE SLUGS/TITLES], map 3–5 internal links for each new post: anchors and exact placements (intro/body/FAQ). Ensure topical relevance and avoid repeating the same anchor.”
Pro tips
- Use modifiers ChatGPT understands well: best/top/cheap/under $/for {room}/brand/size/year (2025)/beginner/quiet/portable.
- For affiliate posts, favor MOFU/BOFU: “best…”, “top…”, “vs.”, “for {specific use}”, “x under $50”.
- Always do a quick manual SERP scan for your top picks and paste results back into ChatGPT for angle + outline tuning.
I'm used to using Jaaxy, but since came back everything based on AI. Before I paid for keyword research tool, taught I would ask CHATGPT if research can be done using the AI since I'm a pro member. How many of you pay for SEO keyword research tools? How many trusts using CHATGPT with this reusable workflow for your businesses.

This is a great format to follow, Janette! I will try kit :)
I have an existing site, so I need to see how it will work with it.
Thanks,
Teri
I use chat GPT for a few things, it rewrote my robots.txt file and I installed it into my root file.
Anyway, Good tips above,
I am going to go one step further, if you use any third party keyword research tools, you can connect your domain from that research tool and ask Chat GPT to give you ideas.
EXAMPLE AHrefs.com/your URL and add it to chat GPT, bypassing expensive monthly costs to use the third party option.
Try it and see what happens.
Regards
Brian
