Before you jump in check the renewal costs. Some of the new extensions are cheap for the first year then the price skyrockets.

All of the answers below are absolutely correct and I highly recommend NOT doing this for the reasons below. If for some reason you have some other huge reason for needing to change your domain and need help with the technical side let me know.

It sounds like it would cause more harm than good.

You've gotten some old information --
While years ago, keywords in domain names used to help in ranking, their importance has decreased significantly over time. Content ranks; domain names don't so much.

"In light of the trend since 2010, many SEOs feel that EMDs [exact match domains] and other keyword domains may become even less beneficial in the future. This does not mean that you should necessarily avoid or abandon keyword domains, but it does mean that keywords shouldn’t be the primary factor you consider when choosing a domain."

Sorry, I don't. I really wish posts, especially like this one, had a publication date included. I don't know of any way to find out when it was published.
If your site is doing well already I don't know if it would be a good idea. Is your domain relevant to the subject of your site? I just think of domain name like Namecheap or JustHost... they maybe not exactly keywords but they content words that are related to their business.
If it is the case with your domain it's maybe just good as it is. Just my opinion though. maybe others here can have a different one.
In the end, it's really your content that will rank for you.
1. Not knowing your current domain name vs the one you like better, it's hard to say. If you've already started to develop a brand and some traffic, I probably wouldn't. But it's up to you.
2. You'll most likely lose some traffic and yes, the new domain would need to be indexed.
3. You would want to create 301 redirects from your old urls to the new ones. If you're hosted on WA, I'm not sure how that is accomplished.

Yes. I have developed some traffic, but I see that the best practice is pick a core keyword for the site, so I thought I could change that and receive better ranking.
From what you say it seems that it might not be worth the effort, and could harm more than help
Changing your domain name probably wouldn't help your site rank better because each article ranks differently on its own. Your site will gain authority over time regardless of the name of your site.
Look at some of the biggest websites with tons of authority. They have domain names that are NOT keywords but have built authority over time with tons of content.
On the other hand, changing now would mean having to get re-indexed etc. I wouldn't bother. That's my 2 cents :)

That's a very good reason to not do that. All though the temptation is quite strong.
What I don't understand, however, is how is it that my competitors get ranked for that keyword when they don't offer to download that product.
They are most likely jumping on the coattails of their competition in the hopes they will capture some of the traffic.
Not worth the risk in my book but its your decision.

What I don't understand, however, is how is it that my competitors get ranked for that keyword when they don't offer to download that product.
