Back to Black
I was looking at my website last week; it appeared rather “busy” to me, and there were Google Ads in some places and my own pictures in others. I just wasn’t sure about it anymore, so I put it up for comments/feedback. No one said anything about the ads, but I did receive a few positive comments about the site, as well as some other constructive comments.
One woman said that it was difficult to see the “Categories” and “Recent Posts” tabs, and she suggested that I make the text larger or change its color (on the left side of my screen). I thought that this would be relatively easy to do, and, about 90 minutes later, I hadn’t made any discernable headway. I still have no idea if it’s even possible to change the font size or the color of the text in just those tabs without changing the code of the website, which I’m not interested in doing at this point.
I saw something that looked interesting in all of this, though. It was the “background” of the site. It had “light”, “dark”, and “custom” as choices. I thought to myself, “well, let me just mess around with this for a little while since I’m here”.
So, I proceeded to change the background of my site to “dark”, and it really made a huge difference. All of the text, the affiliate links, the ads, and the pictures seemed to just “pop” off of the darker-colored background. I guess it has something to do with the contrast; I’m really just guessing because I have no idea.
It made me think that some things just appear better against a dark background. The corona of the sun in a solar eclipse appears really bright with the center of the sun’s light blocked out by the moon. I decided that I like the dark background, so I have kept it; although, I’m not sure if it really does look “cleaner”, or if it’s just my imagination.
So many aesthetically-pleasing visuals are juxtapositioned against a black “canvas”; many of the beautiful astronomical photographs seem to glow against the obsidian-cloaked vacuous abyss known as space.
Anyhow, just changing the background color of the website “fabric” made a huge difference. So many things in life are about perspective and perception, and one often seems to change with the other. I would still like to know if it’s possible to change the test size or color for the “widgets” and the “menu” tabs, but maybe I’ll learn about it in the more distant lessons.
Until next time...
Cheers!
Ian

I recently played around with mine, a momentary lapse of reason. Went with some greys as well as black, really made a difference. 'Zombie' used to be on my running playlist, along with Rogue Traders 'Here come the Drums' and Rachid Taha's 'Barra Barra'. Obviously that was back when I could run more than three songs worth.
LOL. I loved "Zombie"; I think that it was popular when I was a junior in high school. In my mind, the 1990s were like 10 years ago. Time is funny sometimes.

Great Ian--I found the same thing is true for book covers in Kindles cover creator--a color change will make things pop! Congratulations!

Hi Ian, nice to hear that even though you were having challenges in trying to correct something on your website, you eventually did something that makes it look far better.
All the best
Blessings
