Not understanding how to read Google Analytics...

I was reading Course 5, Lesson 5 where Kyle talks about if you post 3 new posts per week, and they each give you 5 clicks, then that is 15 clicks per week, and so and and so on....building on that as you post more.

But, I don't understand how to know if that is working. I am attaching a screenshot of my Google Analytics to see if someone that knows more than me can help me to understand this better.

I mean on here I see 128 sessions, 48 new users, but Kyle talks about clicks and on my Webmaster Tools site I see where it says clicks, but only 13? I am just so confused.

I just really want to feel like this is working. I am being very consistent with posting my content daily, and plan to continue. But, I would just feel better if I could really could understand the stats I am seeing each day and to see my low hanging fruit posts are working, you know?

Good question, I have been a bit confused too, but thanks to the answers you got here I am now much wiser

Hey Jennifer,
Others here at WA may have their own metrics that they track in GA (and there are way too many IMHO), but the one that really clarifies for me is the Behavior Metric. You can see that in your GA dashboard on the left menu items. Scroll down until you see Behavior and click on that. It will drop down some other choices. I like to view the Site Content option and then All Pages.

Now I go one step further with this. In the main results (which is in the right area of the screen) if you scroll down a bit further you will see a button labeled Secondary dimension. When you click on that you will see other choices "Acquisition, Advertising", etc. Choose Acquisition and from there choose Source. This will tell you where your clicks are coming from. This too me is a good amount of information needed to understand if my campaigns are working or not.

Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Jim

This helps some because these numbers look a little better to me where you directed above. It shows 709 page views and 402 unique page views, majority coming from Google. I will keep trying to dig more and learn more. Thanks for everyone's responses!

I dug deeper and I do not see any from traffic type search? Only direct, referral, and organic. That worries me I am not getting any search traffic... :(

Wow. Those are some awesome numbers. What is the time frame are you looking at (you can see that in the upper right hand of your screen in GA and you can change it too)? The default is 30 days.

If those are your numbers this early on you're doing way more than okay. A few other numbers to try and pay attention to is the bounce rate and the amount of time people are spending on the particular page. These are too big numbers that Google views as helping you to gain rankings.

Getting search traffic is way more tricky than it used to be.

You are getting traffic and a seriously good amount from what you state. But not all traffic is good. If you send somebody wanting to buy sneakers to a site that is selling hot tubs you've wasted a visit. Your next step is to figure out what you were doing to get the traffic that you're getting in the first place. If you are using Pay Per Click (PPC) then that is usually easy to track. If you are using a mishmash of different techniques to "throw it up on the wall and see what sticks" than you may need to reel it back in and start measuring what you are doing. Every campaign should be about measuring and testing. Without that we shoot in the dark.

I have Google Adsense on there but I was thinking about taking it off. It only shows .58 to date. I created my website on 10/13/14. So, it is a month old tomorrow. I will get my bounce rate and time spent and post in just a sec.

Ok, my average bounce rate shows 31.03% and average time on page is 00:04:05. I am not sure if that is good? Also, should I be worried about none of the traffic showing "search" as the type? That would make me think I am not really ranking in Google. And, that a lot of this traffic might be from people here in WA?

I do see Google as the source, but none that show search as the traffic? That is weird.

Hey Jennifer, 30 % bounce rate is wickedly awesome! Most people are accepting of twice that much.

As for time spent on page, when was the last time you spent 4 minutes on a page? And you are getting that as an average of hundreds of people. Don't focus on search so much when the stats are telling you some really good stuff. If your site is new, that could be one reason among many that search isn't appearing.

Don't sweat it. Most here would be ecstatic by the kinds of stats you are getting. Good job!
Best Regards,
Jim

Ok, well I guess the only thing I don't understand is why out of all of the adsense and several affiliate marketing things I have mingled in, why I wouldn't have seen any income other than the .58 with adsense?

As for Adsense, people that browse the web have what's known as ad blindness. How many times do you click on ads when browsing yourself these days? Web readers are much more savvy with regards to these types of things than they used to be.

As for affiliate sales, these things take time to build trust, etc. I checked out your website and I think the design is really good. But I was a bit confused about why there where recipes on a site that is about getting out of debt.

Based on the amount of traffic and quality traffic that you are getting, one suggestion is instead of the About Me you have in your widget area, why not put an email opt in with something like "Want to get out of debt? Learn the fastest way to do that with this free report." or something like that. Then when you get people to sign up (and there's no reason to believe they won't with those stats) make sure you send them valuable information. Only put in promotional emails one out of every four or five emails or more. With most of the major autoresponders on the market today, you can set several message into the funnel (and you should) in advance. This prevents the situation of forgetting to send to people which happens often.

Hope this helps,
Best Regards,
Jim

Hey Jennifer,
As another follow up, and I really hope you know that I am only telling you this to help, your design elements are very warm and cosy. But people that are in debt and want to get out of debt are going to feel like that doesn't really match what they are going through. I feel like your site would be great if it was for cooking or some kind of crafts and such. But I just didn't get any kind of vibe about how it was going to help someone get out of debt. And this could be a big reason why people are not connecting with your message. I could be totally off base your sales could start exploding based on those traffic stats you stated. But it's something to keep in mind if they don't.

Best Regards,
Jim

Ok, I do appreciate all of your feedback. It is a lot I will need to think about. I was trying to be more like a money saving mom or frugal living type of website showcasing things I do while on my path to debt freedom. So, I thought any things I do to save money along that path I should share. Maybe I should put more of the cost information in my recipes to show how they will help you stay within a budget. Thank you so much for all of this feedback. I also didn't think about putting the opt-in thing in the side bar instead of that pop-up. I will have to figure out how to do that. :D

There is a very quick video on how to do that here:
http://youtu.be/3aJ0SZ-B3mg

You don't necessarily have to go with Aweber but most of the major autoresponder companies are going to be similar in how you do it.

Jim

I am sure I can't help you although I can encourage you to relax because the answer will come and you will no longer be confused. Of this I am sure!

I am sorry I attached the screenshots but they are not appearing for some reason.

Hey Jennifer,
WA does have restrictions on screenshots. People in the past have used Droplr.com and then pointed the results to those captures but I haven't seen it used too much here lately. Although for various reasons I've been a bit removed. Another option to upload the screen shot to your website but that's a bit of a pain. Droplr.com helps prevent having to do that.
Best Regards,
Jim
