Just a short note to discuss upgrading to Windows 10

Most of you will have new computers and not have this problem
But many are still doing things the old way.

I was quite happy with Windows 7, it has been with me for a few years now
and I could see no reason to change.
Not so my wife.
"What are you doing about my computer, it is no longer supported"

Don't worry, did not cut it as an answer so I thought I would give it a try.

I embrace change because mostly it is for the better but every time I had
to use a computer with 10 on it I was confused.

However, we must all face our fears and take on adversity with an open mind.

The first thing I did was backup all my files to an external hard drive.

I decided to take the free version still being offered on the Internet,
it seemed like a good idea.

Download windows 10
Upgrade this PC
Use the download tool now
Upgrade as PC
Settings updated and search activated
Media creation tool

The process took a few hours as it did its thing and I spent an hour or so
playing with it to get all my ducks lined up.

The result.
I should have done it ages ago, I had no real problems and everything came over
so at this stage it was just too easy.

Yea, I know, time to upgrade my computer but I can still get another year out of the old beast yet.

Hope this helps someone

Peter H

Many of us are resistant to change, Peter, then when we finally do, we find out that, hey, this wasn't so bad!

Peter, I am glad it worked out for you and you can extend the use of your existing computer.

I usually try to avoid major upgrades (like Win 7 to Win 10) which you have aptly described as a phobia. Used to be nightmare waiting to happen.

I will just keep using the same OS with latest updates of the same version.

If I need the new OS, I will get a new computer with it. The reason is the additional capabilities usually require new hardware to work well and it slows my old system down to a halt.

Well done,
Stanley

Hi Peter.

I can relate. I am a champion technophobe! When Windows 10 first came out, it put itself onto my laptop, and I absolutely HATED it! Couldn't find any of my files, etc. Had my computer guru put a program that made Windows 10 look and work like Windows 7, and then I was OK. But when my laptop got the "You Will Cry" virus and it was more expensive to get a new one than to pay to have it fixed, I bought an old Gateway that he had refurbished, AND it ran on Windows 7. I'm still using it, but do have a new computer with Windows 10 on it. I'm dreading learning to use it, but your post has given me hope!

Hi Carol, I am pleasantly surprised and using some new features.
They have a little search bar which I need to use a lot but it works well.
Having put this off for so long I now wonder why.

This all started with my wife complaining that she was not being supported by Windows.

I went back to her today and said I will update your computer. It is a good experience. and she said?

No wait, I am not ready yet. LOL

I hate Windows 10! Finally had the updates disabled because it used so much of my bandwidth and stopped my progress. All seems to be fine now.. Wish I had Windows 7.

We gotta move on Fran,
best wishes from Down Under.

I can relate, Fran! By the way, I haven't forgotten about your guest post. I just haven't had a chance to work on it for several months because my guy has been sick since Nov. 7th. Hoping to get to it soon, though. Will send you a rough draft when I get it ready for your to approve.

thanks, Carol. I'll be here.

Glad to hear it. Haven't had much time to be online much these days.

Most of us have been there (and still are), so we identify with your experience and frustrations.

I sit next to an old Gateway tower computer that I still use occasionally. I recently paid Microsoft over $100 to download 10, when I could have done it a few years back for free.

I do most of my work on an older laptop, and I used the FREE opportunity back then to upgrade to 10.

It is just part of our lives if we want to stay "wired" and up-to-date as much as possible.

Take care, my WA fellow-member..........we will get this down pat someday.

Yes, interesting as the free upgrade worked fine on my PC.
Plus I actually like it.
