Hi Hamish don't give up just yet, my thoughts when I first started were if nothing else I will have developed a portfolio of my writing which has to be good for something (maybe), Marie
Reply
Hamish-S Premium
Hello again, Marie.

That's a very good way of looking at it. You're right; no matter what, we'll have a good portfolio of writing after all of this.

Actually, every now and then I make an offline back-up of my blog so whether it succeeds or not, I can keep a copy of all my posts. I may not have a site I can monetize - and I might never have one - but I'm still learning a lot and that's good too.

Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement. You're very kind!

Hi Hamish. I see you've been with WA for a few months now. Can you share the 3 most productive things that working with WA has helped you with.

I read your "Three months at WA" blog. It speaks highly of what changes you have made in your life of IT.

By the way, thanks for the follow.
Reply
Hamish-S Premium
Hey there, Brian. I don't know if I can think of three things to be honest. And bear in mind that while I've been with WA for three months, I'm still very much a rookie at this.

However, I will say this. My number one interest is writing fiction and for years, I've been trying to make myself visible online so people will be able to find my work. Naturally, I gave blogging a go. Sometimes, I would really get into it but I never got anything in the way of organic traffic and the lack of visitors would inevitably make me lose interest.

I'd start. I'd stop. I'd delete all my content and forget the whole thing. Then after a while, I'd try again but it always ended the same way.

And to be honest, with no organic traffic to my current blog, it's a little tough to stay motivated at the moment as well. However, the difference this time - the difference that WA makes - is that I feel as though I have insider information on how the whole thing works.

Google, I've discovered, is not a real search engine. It doesn't look for any relevant content that matches someone's query (which might explain why the internet seems to be a barren place compared to what it was ten years ago). Instead it uses a whole lot of secret algorithms and SEO business that means far more to the IT expert than to the layman trying to produce good content for readers.

For instance, I've learned recently that we should be posting 2 or 3 times a week, which I didn't know before. I thought once a week was very reasonable but that's not the case. Also, some people here say we need 20 or 30 posts before Google starts noticing our sites. Then there's the whole 'site trust' nonsense where your site requires a whole month to gain a meager 10% of trust, which is a bit like having to run a restaurant for 12 months before customers can dine there.

So what you've got in effect, with the internet and search engines, is a minefield. Now, you can of course go browsing on the web to find ways to navigate it but I've found that in WA, it's much easier to find what you want to know - whether in training videos, tutorials or the blogs of other members.

You can also learn how to make the most out of your Wordpress site as well. It's very hard to find good Wordpress.com tutorials online. There are plenty of Wordpress.org tutorials but the .com site gets shortchanged. Here at WA however, you can find that kind of information very easily.

So what have I learned?

1. Despite what everyone says about CONTENT, it isn't content that's the key. The game is figuring out a lot of tricks to get Google to rank your site (keywords in the first paragraph with headings applied, using Google+, submitting a site map). Writing good content has never been a problem for me but thinking that Google will pay attention to it has been.

2. Google is a useless search engine. Sure, knowing this doesn't really help me too much as a blogger. However, it's handy to know as an internet user and I'm now keeping my eyes open for a proper search engine so I can find more information on the web, not just the 5% of it that Google bothers to index.

3. Wordpress is better than I gave it credit for and it can be customized to make your blog look more like a professional site.

4. BONUS. Don't worry too much about WA rank. Recently, I tried working on that, writing blogs at WA and greeting new members but just a day of inactivity can see your rank slide 50 points or more so honestly, I don't think it's worth the trouble. It could be fun to get a higher rank, sure, but I feel it's a distraction from what we should be really focusing on - and that's getting traffic to our own site.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Hamish

Thanks Hamish, for the honest opinion. I had worked on getting an increase in my Alexa ratings (like the ranking here - varies almost daily).

Writing blogs 2-3x/wk can be a challenge for me. I can post about once/wk with good content. THEN I'm hunting for what might be GOOD content.

I've just decided to enter a new niche, so for a while I can write new things for my Site Rubix site.

Thanks again for the reply.

Yeah, it's fun for me as well. And I think a lot of the information we can learn here about building and managing websites could be useful for many other things. I have a Wordpress site that I set up a while ago to promote some books I wrote but I couldn't generate enough traffic to make it worth my time. However, maybe with the things I'm learning here, I could give it another go. So, yeah, this is very exciting.
Reply
wantuget Premium
I would read your book, what it on? Yes you probably will learn what you need to promote it, keep moving forward. Good luck!
Reply
Hamish-S Premium
Oh, my books are works of fiction so they're not really about any particular subject. Genre though is another matter and the bulk of them are science fiction. If you're curious, you can find them on Amazon (just search for "Hamish Spiers") or you can check out the landing page I made for the books at Wordpress:

https://hamishspiers.wordpress.com/ (The blog has excerpts)

I think I might be able to use some of the things I'm learning here at Wealthy Affiliate to breathe some life into that blog. There's a whole lot of information about generating traffic online that I had absolutely no idea about before and learning about it here is a real eye opener.

Have you seen Kyle's case study about ranking his article on organic milk? It's incredible.
