Confessions Of A Compulsive Checker
They say confession is good for the soul. So I'll admit it - I'm an over-checker.
A what?!
Let me put it this way: I check Google Analytics every day. Too much? I'm not sure. In my own mind I can justify it as staying of top of useful info. But, honestly, there's not much info there to analyze yet - until traffic picks up, that is.
But I keep checking anyway, a few times a day. And not just that - I check how posts are ranking, I check my email, I check the weather report...not that last one so much, but you get the idea.
Why do I feel the need to do all this? Besides being a little compulsive and impatient by nature (a challenging combination!), I think I'm seeking reassurance. I'm hoping the numbers will show that I'm making some progress, and I'm on the right track.
Can anyone else relate?
But I'd like to let go of this behavior. Yes, numbers and data do play an important part of running an online business. But if I spend too much time or energy focusing on them I'll make myself crazy. And that will seriously mess with my creativity.
So here's to my newest New Year's vow: DON'T trust in over-checking, and DO trust in the WA system!

I check once daily. I want to see if I am getting any traffic. I want to see if a certain action I did brought me any traffic. I want to see where my traffic is coming from, and are they sticking around, or do I lose them on page 1. Sadly, this is the case, and my traffic is less than 10 per day. So, I feel I have some serious work to do in generating traffic. But I would not have known this at all if I hadn't checked. Also, I fetch and render once or twice a week to see if I have any errors. I think repairing that is valuable, so,,A healthy balance. That is the key.
You're absolutely right - finding balance is huge. Sounds like you have a really good take on it!

Is it keeping you from doing other things that you would like to do? If not, this is what you LIKE to do and it's OK. Perspective: You could watch a two hour movie everyday, if that's what you like to do. The important thing here is, "What do I enjoy!" Blessings, Robin
