How do you compare?

I used to compare myself a lot with others in the past, and the thing about this, it always gave me some reason to feel bad about myself - not good enough, not fast enough, not intelligent enough,....

Once I discovered that this was really not helpful to me at all I decided to just be more accepting of myself the way I am.

That's me; there are people who get motivated from comparing themselves to others. Fine too because we are all different. For those who don't feel motivated by such comparisons, I would encourage you to change this habit. You are as you are. I think learning to accept ourselves brings us much further than constantly looking at what we are not doing, why we aren't like this or like that, wanting to be someone else.

Now I am not suggesting you stop striving to reach your goal or success, not at all. Just look at what it brings you when you compare yourself to others - is it helpful to you or does it more often than not leave you feeling inadequate in some way?

We all know that

  • success means different things to different people,
  • we all have a different speed at which we work,
  • our starting points are invariably different,
  • our backgrounds are different, so while one person is already making their first $10,000 within a month of being here (!!!, this is possible I know, but likely???), and another has been here for 2 years and is still not making much, I think it would be a waste of time for them to compare themselves to each other.

Finding a balance between accepting but stretching ourselves is certainly not always easy. It might help though if we are willing to face up to challenges which take us out of our comfort zones, look at the way others do so, ask them for support and advice, AND at the same time seek to maintain our uniqueness by remembering to hit the IGNORE, ENTER buttons when we start comparing ourselves in ways which make us feel inadequate.

We are all unique, let's live and enjoy being that!

Now I am going to go off and see how my blog compares to the others which were written today....ha ha ha!!!!

I struggle with this alot. This is a particularly rough time in my life so it has gotten even worse lately. "At my age I should be.....by now". Its amazing how much we beat ourselves up. The mind is so strong. Thanks for this important reminder. It is not easy but I'll recommit to paying more attention to my thoughts. But tomorrow. Today is the worst of all so I'm letting myself binge watch Netflix and partake in emotional eating for one day. Tomorrow, its back to work.

Hi, we are all very unique human beings. Irv.

Thanks hunny, it's a great reminder that we are all unique and so shouldn't compare ourselves to others :)

I like it, greenvee. Just what I needed at the moment. Thanks for sharing.

good to hear - everything at the right time eh!

Everyone brings something to the table of life and it's our diversity that enriches one another. Comparing is pointless energy. Thank you very much Valina for sharing this.

Welcome!

Wonderful way to end week my friend.............extremely good words and thoughts. Stay well.

Steve

Thanks my dear

I have learned that it is OK to ask those 'stupid' beginner questions, here at WA. I have never been put down nor ridiculed, but instead, received helpful and supportive answers.

Good to hear AND there are no stupid questions!

Thanks I need that!

Welcome :)

I've never even thought to check.....
But you remind me, I haven't written one today!

:-)
