Hi, WA Friends!

Did you know that today is Pi Day?

Pi Day is an international celebration of the mathematical constant "Pi." It is celebrated annually on March 14th (3.14).

Unfortunately, this is not the kind of pie that you can eat, but it still has its uses.

What The Heck Is Pi, Anyway?

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.14159.

It is an irrational number, meaning that it can’t be accurately expressed as a fraction because its decimal digits never end. Despite the fact that it is an irrational number, pi is incredibly useful in mathematics. It is used in a variety of equations and calculations, particularly those related to circles and spheres.

Who Invented Pi?

No one person invented Pi. It dates all the way back to ancient Egypt and Babylon (1900-1600 BCE)!

Ten famous equations that use Pi:

1. Area of a Circle: A = πr² - (multiplying pi with the radius of the circle squared)

2. Arc Length: s = rθ - calculates the length of an arc (multiplying the radius of the circle with the angle of the arc in radians)

3. Volume of a Sphere: V = 4/3πr³ - (multiplying 4/3 with pi and the radius of the circle cubed)

4. Surface Area of a Sphere: A = 4πr² - (multiplying 4 with pi and the radius of the circle squared)

5. Law of Cosines: c² = a² + b² - 2ab cos C - calculates the length of the third side of a triangle, by using the lengths of the other two sides and the angle opposite the third side

6. Pythagorean Theorem: a² + b² = c² - calculates the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle, by using the lengths of the other two sides

7. Trigonometric Identities: sin²x + cos²x = 1 - calculates the values of trigonometric functions, by expressing one trigonometric function as a combination of the other two.

8. Fourier Series: f(x) = a₀/2 + ∑(an cos(nπx/L) + bn sin(nπx/L)) - represents periodic functions as a series of sines and cosines, by summing the coefficients of each wave component.

9. Kepler’s Law of Planetary Motion: r = a(1 – e²)/(1 + e cos(θ)) - calculates the orbit of a planet, by using the semi-major axis and eccentricity of the orbit.

10. Navier-Stokes Equation: ∂u/∂t + (u∙∇)u = – ∇p + ν∇²u - describes the motion of fluid substances, by using the velocity, pressure, and viscosity of the fluid.

Did you know that today is also Albert Einstein's Birthday?

Happy Pi Day 🥧 & Happy Birthday Al! 🎂

Hey Frank, say what! Hey, you spelled pie wrong. I guess that's why the circumference of my belly is out of control, LOL.

I hope you have a great evening!

Glad they didn't require you to know that stuff to graduate high school. I would still be sitting there. Ha

Chet

Haha, Chet!

I’d rather have pie than pi, any day! 😎

I had way too much fun in high school with all the garage bands! 🙃

Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸

Hi Frank...That kind of suits the tone of the day then! I didn't know that. Happy Pi Day!

Susan 😎🎸🥧

Thanks, Susan!

Have a great day!

Frank 🥧😎🎸

Thanks, Frank...you, too! 🎸😎🥧

Really ?
I can't believe that I didn't know that!
And I absolutely love Maths
Happy PI day

Haha, No worries, Simone!

You'll never forget the date now, March.14 😎

Absolutely not, Frank
I won't

👍😎

😊😊

It's hard to buy gloves for Pi...

Lol! 👍😎🎸

I will use any excuse for eating a piece of pie in honor of the day!

My favorite is cherry, followed by pecan. Of course a delicious Boston Creme Pie works well for me too!

I know what Pi is, but math was never a strong subject for me. But pie? Oh yeah, that one works!

Happy Pi Day to you too!

:)

Hi, Jeannine

Cherry pie is always a fabulous choice!

My mom made an awesome pecan pie from fresh pecans that she would purchase at the wholesale nut store!

My wife makes it now from the same recipe, but that nut store is no longer around, and it doesn't taste quite as fresh, but it's still awesome!

We had a homemade Boston creme pie last week, and it went fast!

In case you can't tell, I really love to eat! 😎

I like the way you think! I bet your wife is an amazing baker, but somehow it can be hard to make it the way Mom made it. All my pies come from Village Inn - I can't bake worth a lick!

Yes, Stacy is a fantastic cook! I'm sooo lucky to have her for so many reasons!

My mother was an excellent cook, but Stacy is just as good, if not better. She learned all my mother's Italian recipes and also cooks a lot of international gourmet dishes.

I'll bet you cook a lot better than you're saying. 😎

We have some excellent bakeries in the area, and we go there often.

Thank you for the education, Frank!

-Mike

You're welcome, Mike! 😎

Rock On! 🤘

Wow, Frank! I learned some tings here, and Happy Birthday, Albert Einstein!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Jeff😎🤘🎸

Haha. Thanks, Jeff! 😎

Happy Pi Day! 🥧

Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸

Happy PI day, Frank!

Enjoy your Tuesday!

Jeff😎🤘🎸

You, too, Jeff!

It's raining hard here, but I like it much better than snow! 😎🎸

I like the rain as opposed to snow too!

Jeff😎🎸

Great information, Frank, and happy birthday to the late great Albert Einstein!

Myra

Thanks, Myra!

Have a great Pi Day! 😎
