Hi WA Friends!

Yes, I'm back with another music post! Why do I bother to write these?? Well, because it is my niche, some WA members seem to enjoy them, and I hope you do, too! 😎

Please help me celebrate Debbie Davie's birthday! πŸ₯³

A Little History

Debbie Davies with Albert Collins (The Ice Man!)

(Written with the help of ChatGPT)

Debbie Davies is an American blues guitarist, born on August 22, 1952, in Los Angeles, California,

Debbie began her professional career in the 1980s when she moved to San Francisco and joined the blues scene. She gained early experience playing with Albert Collins, the "Master of the Telecaster," which was a significant breakthrough in her career.

In 1993, Debbie released her debut solo album, Picture This, which immediately established her as a formidable force in the blues world. The album showcased her fiery guitar playing and soulful vocals, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Throughout her career, Debbie has played with several notable bands and artists. In addition to her time with Albert Collins, she performed with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tommy Castro, Charlie Musselwhite, and Coco Montoya.

Equipment Used

(For all you WA "Gearheads," courtesy of ChatGPT and me)

  • Guitars
  • Fender Stratocaster: Debbie Davies is best known for her use of the Fender Stratocaster, a staple in her collection. She prefers models with a maple neck, which she believes provides a brighter tone that suits her blues playing style. Over the years, she has played various Stratocasters, often customizing them with different pickups to achieve her desired sound.
  • Gibson Les Paul: Occasionally, Davies also plays a Gibson Les Paul, especially when she wants a thicker, more robust sound. The Les Paul’s dual humbucker setup allows her to produce a warmer, fuller tone, which she uses to great effect in her recordings and live performances.
  • Acoustic Guitars: Davies has also been known to play acoustic guitars, particularly when recording more intimate, stripped-down tracks. Brands she’s used include Martin and Gibson, known for their rich sound and solid craftsmanship.
  • Amplifiers
  • Fender Twin Reverb: A cornerstone of Davies’ sound, the Fender Twin Reverb is her amplifier of choice. Known for its clean tones and ample headroom, this amp allows Davies to project her guitar’s natural tone while providing the power and clarity needed for her performances.
  • Fender Deluxe Reverb: For smaller venues or studio work, Davies often opts for the Fender Deluxe Reverb. It offers a similar tonal quality to the Twin Reverb but with a more manageable size and power output, making it ideal for more intimate settings.
  • Marshall JCM800: On occasion, Davies has used a Marshall JCM800, especially when she requires a grittier, more aggressive tone. The JCM800’s legendary overdrive is perfect for adding an edge to her blues-rock numbers.
  • Effects
  • Ibanez Tube Screamer: The Ibanez Tube Screamer is a key component of Davies’ pedalboard. This overdrive pedal is known for its smooth, mid-range boost, which enhances her solos and adds warmth to her rhythm playing.
  • Boss DD-3 Digital Delay: For adding depth and texture to her sound, Davies often uses the Boss DD-3 Digital Delay. This pedal helps her create space within her solos, allowing her notes to linger and build atmosphere.
  • Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb: Reverb is an essential part of Davies’ sound, and she often uses the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail to add a lush, ambient quality to her playing. This pedal provides a variety of reverb types, from classic spring to more modern, expansive sounds.

My Meeting With Debbie

I met Debbie during the soundcheck of an Albert Collins (AKA, "The Iceman") concert at a small club back in the 1980s. See the following post for more info about Albert Collins:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/frankb-1/blog/happy-birthday-albert-collins-october-1-1932

She was onstage setting up her effects board and playing blues riffs on a Fender Stratocaster guitar to get the sound adjusted just right. I went up to the stage to compliment her on her playing, and I'll never forget what she said to me; "When Al comes out here, he’s going to blow the roof off this place and melt the walls!” Lol

I’m here to tell you that she was not exaggerating; if anything, that statement was watered down! I can easily believe that he weakened the building’s structure that night! Al let Debbie take a few solos that evening, and they were superb!

How We're Celebrating Debbie's Birthday

I'll be enjoying Debbie's music throughout the day. Tonight, we're having a few friends and family members over for hotdogs, hamburgers, and steaks on the grill, with beer, wine, and cocktails to wash it down.

While we eat, we'll watch one of my favorite music videos on DVD: "Albert Collins: In Concert: Ohne Filter." The band includes Debbie Davis, and the set list is pretty close to the one they did when I saw them in concert. Duke Robillard comes onstage to do a few songs with the band at the end of the show.

I have a '60s first-generation custom shop Fender Stratocaster that was played by Duke, but that's a story for another day! Lol

Hi Frank

I will definitely check out your post on the Ice Man! πŸ₯Ά

Tim 🀘😎🀘😎🀘😎

Let me know what you think, Tim! 😎

Frank 🀘🎸

Hey Frank

Yeah, the Ice Man is a blues monster for sure!
I can't figure out how his guitar doesn't fall off, with the strap on that shoulder! If I tried that, mine would surely hit the floor. 🀣🀣

Rock On!! 🎸🀘😎

Tim 🎼

Hahaha, I saw him play up really close in a small club and he wore his guitar just like that!

The strings on his guitar were all rusted. He broke his high-E string near the end of a set.

He didn’t not have a backup Tele, so they stopped the show while he tried to find a replacement string.

He found one, all coiled together with a bunch of other strings. It was inside the back of his amp, and all rusted, too, and had kinks in it! 😱

He slapped it on and started playing some wicked 12-bar blues intro! Lol 😎

Frank 🎸

Haha, that's crazy!!

I saw Stevie Ray Van up close and he broke a string and you could hardly tell, he didn't miss a beat until the roadie ran out to swap guitars. That was very impressive!

I love the old rusty string story, now that's a real musician there!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Rock On! 🀘😎

Tim 🎼

Yeah, Stevie got away with it because he had a docked (non-floating, so it can only lower the pitch of the strings) tremolo bridge on his guitars, so if one string breaks the others stay in tune.

I saw Stevie in concert with Jeff Beck, which was an amazing night!

Jeff used a floating bridge, so he would have to stop playing immediately and grab another guitar if a string broke on his Strat! The other five strings would be sharp and way out of tune in relation to each other.

Clapton uses a blocked (can’t move in either direction) tremolo bridge, so he would be ok with a broken string. 😎

Of course you would know about blocking a trem system! Haha. Look who I'm talking to! Haha

A few of my guitar players did that back in the day.

Want to set up my strat? Haha

Tim 🎡

Haha, of course!πŸ˜†

The Eric Clapton signature Strats come with a wooden block inside the tremolo cavity.

The springs on a blocked Strat make it sound different than a hard tail Strat. The hard tail sounds less resonant but has a bit more natural sustain.
