Google's New "Privacy Sandbox" Initiative!
(Title image by DALL-E 3)
Hi WA Friends!
Are you familiar with Google's ongoing Privacy Sandbox initiative? If you are making money by using cookies (code placed on your visitors' websites that gives you credit for things like affiliate marketing sales), then this is something you need to follow as the technology is changing.
Is Google Killing Cookies?
No, Google Chrome does not plan to phase out cookies entirely. On July 22nd, 2024, Google announced a change in direction for its "Privacy Sandbox" initiative which originally aimed to eliminate third-party cookies. Instead, they're looking to develop a new system that gives users more control over their browsing data within Chrome. This is still under development, and Google claims they'll be working with regulators and the industry before rolling it out.
What Are The Details?
The details of the new system replacing third-party cookies in Chrome are still under development. However, we can look at Google's Privacy Sandbox proposals to get a general idea. Some of this information is courtesy of Google Gemini and ChatGPT 4o.
Here are some of the key points:
- Focus on user privacy: The core principle is giving users more control over their data and limiting how they're tracked across websites.
- Replacing third-party cookies: Instead of cookies that track users across sites, new mechanisms will be developed. One proposal is "Topics" which assigns temporary, non-identifiable categories based on browsing habits. This allows for relevant ad targeting without revealing a user's identity.
- Measurement and reporting: New tools are being designed to measure ad effectiveness without compromising user privacy. This will be crucial for advertisers who rely on data to understand how their campaigns perform.
Overall, the goal is to create a system that benefits both users and businesses. Users will have more privacy controls, and businesses will still have tools to deliver relevant ads and measure their success.

What Should Affiliate Marketers Do Going Forward?
For affiliate marketers, these changes means they will need to adapt their strategies to the new privacy standards. The loss of third-party cookie functionalities as we currently know them could limit the ability to track user behavior across different sites, making it harder to target ads and measure their effectiveness. Marketers will need to rely more on first-party data and explore new tools and methods provided by Google's Privacy Sandbox to maintain effective advertising and tracking.

Hi Frank, I read about that before you posted this, so I already knew. I get a lot of SEO emails and also subscribe to a variety of SEO professionals, and Search Engine Journal Land is one of them. Great on the AI art. It reminds me a little bit of the old movie War of the Worlds, Alien Invasion. Now it's ROBOT INVASION; run for your dear life! LOL. It looks awesome. It's a little too much violence for my taste. I was right about the blow them out. You did it with fire rather than using the big bad wolf, hahaha! I try to use a little humor when I see some violence, robots destroy us; yes, it sure did, as it happened with CrowdStrike; hence its name. It had a worldwide impact. Bet they used AI in their software that screwed up because AI got smarter, right? It angered many people.
Thanks, Brenda! π
Yeah, we watched the War of the Worlds movie with Tom Cruise last week. Check out that version if you've never seen it!
I love giant robots and creatures, so I started integrating them into my Pinterest site about three weeks ago. They're just starting to get saves and outbound clicks.
I'm sure you realize that I'm not a person who condones real-life violence, but I guess I have a bit of a wild imagination. Lol π€£
I think more guitar people are starting to open Pinterest business accounts now that Google organic search traffic has tanked, so I won't have to try to create guitar pins for wedding planners and fashion influencers; haha! π
CrowdStrike certainly got some free massive brand recognition! We'll see how it all works out for them in the end.
Rock On! π€

Nice! π
It'll be interesting when we have AI robots among us and playing music, Michael! π

Hi Brenda
Yeah, I have the War of the Worlds 1953 version on DVD and the 2005 version on 4K. They are both excellent!
My mother loved scary movies, especially monster movies. My dad did not care for them, and my brother and sister were too scared to see them, so she took me to all the matinees at the local movie theatre. We also saw all the reruns on TV, all in black and white at the time.
In the 1950s, there were three TV channels: 6, 10, and 12. It was hard to find movies you liked, but most of the scary ones came on in the late evening.
How I miss those days; so much fun! π
Frank πΈ
Hi Brenda
Wow, sorry you had that bad childhood experience!
I have all the Christopher Lee horror movies on DVD and Blu-ray, including the original vampire silent movie.
Stacy wonβt watch any of them after the sun goes down. Lol π
Frank πΈ
Haha, great idea, Brenda. π
Stacy actually likes to watch them, but in the daytime only! Lol π
Frank πΈ
Hey Frank,
Does rhis affect chrome only?
I use Google services, but I do not use chrome.
Thanks,
Rudy
Hi Rudy
Yes, Google is developing it for Chrome, but I suspect that other browsers will eventually follow suit.
Rock On! π€π₯
Frank πΈ
Yeah, it's just another change to adapt to, Rudy, which is the nature of this business. π
Enjoy the rest of your day!

This Cookie post has affected the tone of my Fender. I would request a full refund for my time or will settle for a free tuning.
Good post.

Thanks, Frank. I will dig into your links.
As an aside, I've noticed that many of your guitar-wielding rockers are extremely dangerous. The song is We Built This City (on rock and roll), not we destroyed this city...
You're welcome, Dave. π
Hahaha, I'm simply trying to warn other of the dangers of Rock And Roll, which can rot your brain! Just look at what happened to me! Lol πΆπ πΆ β οΈ π΅βπ«β οΈ

Hahaha, Dave! I start to fade out, too, around 1 AM! π₯³ β‘π΄

Thanks for this New to me google privacy sandbox. Cookies has never been on my radar ever. Near all times, I do not invite cookies to the party as I read into articles. However, I think I'd better get an understanding of cookies and google sandbox. Keep on rockin' Frank
Hi Rick
To get paid when you make an affiliate marketing sale the buyer must have your cookie in their Internet browser at the time they purchase the item.
Frank πΈ
I didn't think of cookies as a way of connection. Good to know.
Yes, they are essential for payment and tracking other metrics, Rick.
Frank πΈ
I'm the "New Kid On The Block" and no I was not part of the band....lol
Thank you for the insight to how cookies works.
Also appreciate you spending extra time to assist me.
No problem, Rick. π
