Surprises
Well, on Sunday I was staying home trying to get some yard work done, we finally got some rain, and weeds are easier to pull when there is wet ground. My wife was at work and my 10 year old daughter was with me. Unfortunately all of her friends in the neighborhood were gone for the day, and she kept bugging be wanting me to do something with her. I kept telling her that I had a lot of stuff to do around the yard and asked if she wanted to help. She tried, but got tired of doing yard work pretty quick. As I was doing my yard work I was thinking of things to do to keep her busy.
I thought to myself maybe take her on a hike, or play at the park, or go to the pet store, something to keep her from bugging me. Then a thought came to me, how about fishing. Something I had been wanting to do for a while myself, and my daughter had not been fishing in quite a while. So, I went online got my fishing license, unpacked my fishing gear I had stored away, and off fishing we went at our local fishing pond in the middle of town.
When we got there the place was packed. No parking and hundreds of people fishing at the small man made lake they made in the middle of town. We had maybe 5 ft of space between us and others around us. I asked my daughter if she wanted to go somewhere else, but she insisted on staying there.
We were there for about two hours, and of course did not catch anything. Actually, no one was catching anything. I was surprised my daughter had at least that much patience to say that long. She then began to ask to go home, I told her just wait for another 30 min and then we can go home.
There at the lake was a dock where the park would tie up their paddle boats. The water is still a little to cold, so there were no paddle boats yet, and her bobber went behind the dock and I could not see it. I asked her to go check on it to see where it was at. She went to see and told me that she saw a catfish. I thought she just saw one come to the top and did not think anything of it. Then all of a sudden she pulls on a fishing line that she saw lying by the deck, not her own fishing line, and low and behold there was a catfish on the end of it. So, as I run over to her to help her she begins pull that line in there was a second catfish on the line. She was so excited and a little scared. As I was bringing them up as the game warden shows up and I ask if I can keep them since they were not on my line. He said yes! Everyone around was just as surprised as we were to see two fish that we had caught.Some were a little jealous, but most were polite and congratulated us.
So, I get the hooks off of them tie them to a rope I had brought and we went on our way home. She was smiling from ear to ear and holding the catfish proudly as we walked to our car.
As I was driving home, I couldn't help but think about how none of this would have happened if she would not have bugged me. This was a memory that we would have for our lifetime. I also could not help but think of how WA was a surprise for me. I probably would have not joined WA if I would have not lost my job. Then here I am with great people, great training, great atmosphere!
Remember surprises are just around the corner, be patient keep on keeping on, bug a little and you never know what you are going to see or get around the corner.
