Wandering On Work, Worth, and Walls
Or...wandering with Sami
There are some conversations that don’t just offer thoughts... they offer mirrors.
Sami left a comment that wasn’t just a reply; it was a gentle unraveling of her journey. From the watchful ease of working in a casino, to the quiet pleasure of curating classic books, to the weight of responsibility in doing someone’s personal income tax. Her words didn’t just speak about burnout or obligation. They mapped out something deeper: how the flavor of work shifts over time, and how we each negotiate the space between freedom and responsibility.
She wrote, “This wall of not wanting to obligate myself to anything has long kept me a captive.”
That hit home.
Because for many creatives, the wall isn’t just exhaustion. It’s the fear of entering a contract we might not be able to honor. Not just with others, but with ourselves.
Sami spoke about enjoying the low-responsibility pleasure of editing long-forgotten books. She reflected on her early days, when showing up at work was fun because the stakes didn’t rest on her shoulders. And that led to her question:
"Do you find responsibility to your customer more than you want to do?"
The honest answer? Sometimes, yes.
Especially when the creative spark feels dim. Especially when burnout builds its silent wall. Because showing up to do something you love can be even more draining than doing something you don’t... if you feel like it defines your worth.
But what Sami also reminded me is that work can evolve. That sometimes, shifting directions isn’t failure. It’s wisdom. That curating, editing, tending... these are also forms of creation. They carry weight, yes, but often a gentler one.
This conversation reminded me that responsibility doesn’t have to mean burden. It can mean alignment.
So thank you, Sami, for letting us wander with you. And for showing that sometimes the best way through the wall is a quiet walk beside someone else who’s been there too.

Great post, Fleeky. I like your share with Sami on wandering with the work, worth, & walls as it does bring a fastening perspective.
Myra ♥️
Thank you so much Myra.
I love how you phrased that: “a fastening perspective.” There’s something grounding in that… like the way a shared story can anchor us in truth we hadn’t named yet. So glad the wandering resonated with you. ✨
Here’s to finding steady ground even as we explore. 🙌
Thanks Fleeky!
Work, Worth and Walls sort of reminds me of a crew of sailors on a huge sailboat. They know they have to get from one side of the Atlantic to the other, and though they enjoy their work individually and as a team, they also know that anything bad can happen along the way.
They step up to the challenge, ready to give it their all. They work and laugh during the easy times, sailing smoothly across the water. Then they run into a storm and their work takes a sudden change, a change that requires a new direction in their understanding and worth in their craft.
That's a lot like LIFE.
Wow… that sailing metaphor captures it perfectly. 🌊⛵
The image of a crew, bonded by both joy and unpredictability, mirrors creative life so well. We set out with intention, but the sea always has its say. And you're so right: storms don’t just test us, they reshape our understanding of worth, direction, and resilience.
Thank you for this soul-deep reflection. It reminds me that even when we drift or detour, we’re still part of the voyage. ⚓️
Grateful to be sailing alongside minds like yours.

It was my pleasure Fleeky. Your post reminded me of a story I had heard of a sailing expedition and what happens when an unsuspecting storm comes about.

Fleeky,
It sounds better when you write about it than when I live it.
We all have stories, don't we? And those of us who are fortunate to have had longer lives,
have lots of stories!
I hope that others who get walled in with whatever it is we bring with us can come on through
the wall and find their dreams too.
Thanks,
Sami
Sami ... you lived it so truthfully, I simply echoed what was already there. 💛
Yes, we all have stories… and yours held more than memory. It held light. The kind that helps others see their way through the very walls they’ve built.
I’m deeply moved by your hope ... that others can come through and find their dreams too. That’s the kind of ripple only lived wisdom creates.
Thank you, Sami. For your stories, your candor, and the gentle way you walk with others.
